CIFFA Special eBulletin - Update #3 Impacts of Hanjin Financial Difficulties - Q&A
This is a rapidly changing environment and CIFFA will share updates on a regular basis as we have solid information to communicate. Please feel free to share these eBulletins in their entirety with your customers.
Q: Is CN loading to rail import Hanjin containers presently on the dock?
A: Yes, existing discharged freight at west coast port locations is being rail loaded onto the CN network, and will be available for outgate at destination CN terminals.
Q: What about empty returns? Will CN receive empty Hanjin containers as usual?
A: CN continues to accept empty Hanjin containers across our network. If this position changes, we will notify your organization.
Q: What is happening with the Hanjin vessel that arrived at Prince Rupert around 9pm Tuesday August 30th?
A: The vessel is at anchor and is not being worked as of 12:30 EDT today. As we understand it, both CN Rail and DP World are reviewing their options and will make a decision regarding working the vessel as soon as possible. There are questions of payments already due from Hanjin and questions of 'post-receivership' payments for their services. Decisions will of course also consider the cargo owner - customer's - need to receive their goods as expeditiously as possible. We expect an update later in the day.

CN Rail has 'put a 24 hour pause' on all Hanjin containers and is waiting for further information from Hanjin. We understand this to mean that containers that are on the train are being moved but that additional Hanjin containers are not being loaded to rail. We have also learned from member firms that CN terminals are not releasing inbound Hanjin containers and that drivers trying to retrieve Hanjin containers are being turned away from CN. During this 'pause' period, CN has advised it will not assess additional storage due to their decision.
CIFFA strongly urges CN to reconsider this decision and to allow pick-up of Hanjin containers that have been released to move from the rail to waiting customers
