For the last hundred years, the traffic flows in our industry have mirrored the general immigration patterns in Canada; east to west. New Canadians arrived in the Maritmes, moved to Ontario or Quebec and, eventually, continued west to the Prairies, Alberta and BC.
In the past five years, there has been a surprising reversal, especially in Ontario & Quebec. People in central Canada have begun to move east to the Maritime provinces in record numbers. Some of that is native East coasters moving home to friends and family, some of it is Baby Boomers looking for a retirement home that is both beautiful and economical, and the rest...well, each of those provinces have their own appeal.
This spring, the trickle of moves heading east, especially from Ontario, has become a flood. Almost half the long-distance moves coming into our offices are going east from Ontario. Allied has begun reassigning their planning staff to cope with the anticipated rush.
We are ready but, the fact of the matter is, the longer this trend continues, the more it has the potential to overwhelm the fleet capacity of the entire household goods moving industry.
