You can run the best heater on the market and still lose most of that heat between midnight and sunrise. Evaporation is the culprit, and it accounts for the large majority of heat loss in an open pool. A solar blanket sits on the surface, stops the evaporation, and lets the sun add a few degrees for free during the day. This is the question we get more than any other, and the honest answer is that it depends on how you use your pool.

Gas heats fast and does not care how cold the air is, which makes it right for weekend properties and shoulder-season swimming. A heat pump costs far less per hour to run but needs warm air to pull from, which makes it right for pools that stay at temperature all season. Get this decision wrong and you either overpay every month or wait three hours for a swim.
