SYC Annual Borland Race:
Borland Race Update – Leg 1
It was a light wind start that ended in a dramatic windy finish for the lead boats on the 1st upwind leg of the 2025 Borland Race at Stormont Yacht Club. Each year a group of brave sailors race over a weekend, from SYC to
Crysler Park Marina. One upriver leg, stay overnight and then a 2nd down river leg. Both races are counted individually. 16 boats were at the start line, which according to SYC long time members, is a first. It was a thrill to see that many boats for a race. Most boats followed the ‘King’ of the Borland, Brian Clinton on Outback, he took the route north of the Croil Island. However Mattea, with Lynn Marie at the helm, bravely
chose to go through the narrow passage east and then south of Croil. It paid off. After the fleet met up in the main St. Lawrence river, Mattea was far ahead of most of the fleet. Outback of course was ahead of everybody with their impressive black sail. Outback crossed first but it was the next group of boats which had a thrilling
drag race to the finish. Mattea and Essoin were side by side after 4 hours of racing followed closely by the locomotive Meissa . Line honours went to Outback, Essoin, Mattea and Meissa. Followed closely by Mer Soleil and Rythmos. Great race was had by all and everyone arrived safely at the marina.

Sunday, rinse and repeat! Borland Race Update – Leg 2
It was the second day of the Borland! We started at 10:30 and it was a downwind race the whole way, except for the final leg. Mattea, Rythmos and Essoin managed to dance the tango at the beginning of the race getting within inches of each other. Then from behind, like a pirate ship, came Outback with their massive black sail, veered to port and off he went. Shortly into the race Mattea brought out their beautiful spinnaker. When a
boat decides to race with a spinnaker it’s a calculated risk. You get dinged points for flying it which means you have to give other boats more time. But if you can get ahead of the fleet enough you can win the race. It was beautiful to see all of the boats together for a long time.
The wind was directly behind us for the main channel so most everyone was wing on wing. That means that the main sail and genoa are on opposite sides of the boat. Outback and Mattea decided to go the same route as most of the boats on the upwind. This time it was Knot Normal and Sealestial which went further down the river before heading north. It paid off. With more current and a shorter racing distance they were up with Outback and Mattea by the time they cleared Croile. Chinook was having a great race too and was at the front of the pack along with Essoin. With the current going with us and a steady wind we were back in our own waters in just a few hours. Line honours went to Mattea, Outback and Sealestial.

This was a super weekend with much comradery, socializing and pure racing. A great weekend was had by all!

The Stormont Yacht Club (SYC) is in full swing with
its’ 2025 Youth Sail School! SYC is offering a youth sailing program for children and youth ages 9 -15,
during the weeks of July 14 – July 18, and July 21 – July 25. SYC’s Youth Sail Program is based on Sail Canada’s ICANSail, CANSail and new for 2025 – CANSail 2.

The program is taught by SYC volunteer instructors who are club members and “Sail Canada” trained and certified. CANSail programs are professional and focus on introducing and developing sailing skills in a safe, fun, and active learning environment with lots of time
spent in boats and on the water. The program provides beginner to intermediate level sailing instruction, assessments of learning, and certification, with the goal of fostering strong fundamental skills and lifelong
participation in the sport.

Participants are taught the basics of seamanship – wind direction, points of sail, sheet, steering, maneuvering, and sailing sportsmanship. Participants will learn how to safely handle small sailboats in light to medium strength winds using SYC’s fleet of young adult and kid-friendly sailing dinghies. Our fleet includes Optimists, Lasers and CL-16s.

Youth Sail - CANSail 2 Instructor Certification
Congratulations to SYC’s new Level 2 Youth Sail Instructors—Peter Mayer, Kate Miller, and Benoit Laberge—on earning their Sail Canada CANSail 2 Instructor Certification. Their journey began in February 2025 and included passing a demanding theory exam focused on sailing skills, safety, and instruction techniques, followed by a two-weekend technical clinic held in challenging weather conditions. After successfully completing all requirements, they are now certified to teach CANSail 2 at SYC for the 2025 season. Kudos to them for their commitment and perseverance!
