LILLOOET'S OWL BUS FACES A BLEAK FUTURE
After providing intercity bus services between Kamloops and Whistler, B.C. for almost five years, Owl Bus will stop operating on February 1, 2024. It has been a bit of a wild ride, given that the route has run over the Duffey Lake Road (Highway 99 North) in all seasons and all weathers. The bus was occasionally stuck behind slides and accidents and has provided service to all who ask.
The route is very useful as it is an alternative to Highways 1 and 5, stopping at Whistler where there are several bus options to Squamish, Horseshoe Bay, Vancouver and YVR. Owl Bus ridership has increased over the years, and might be viable for another operating company. Larger bus lines have shown interest in using this route to Vancouver and perhaps one will step up to do so.
The other destination, Kamloops, is accesible by the B.C. Transit Health Bus, which only charges $5. per ride, $10 for both ways, and is designed to return to Lillooet on the same day late in the afternoon.
Local intercity driving has been a large part of the business and perhaps rideshares, poparides, and other ways of connecting people with transportation south from Lillooet will become more active along the corridor. There is need here for affordable medical and other travel and providers will hopefully step up.
My advancing age means I can no longer provide this service to Lillooet and the surrounding areas. It has been a tremendous privilege to offer affordable intercity bus services here in Lillooet and I have been proud to do so. Thank you.
