Always, always, always, check yourself…

I woke up at 3 a.m. because it was too quiet.
Not peaceful quiet.
Wrong quiet.

I was parked at a rest area in Texas with 40,000 pounds of ice cream behind me.
Delivery was at 7 a.m. in San Antonio.
When you pull a re**er, you sleep with one ear on that unit.
You get used to the hum.
The fan.
The engine kicking on and off all night.
And at 3 a.m., it wasn’t making a sound.

I jumped out in my socks.
The re**er display was dark.
I hit the button.
Nothing.
Hit it again.
It coughed once and died.
That’s when I checked the fuel gauge on the re**er tank.
Empty.

At the shipper, they told me the re**er was fueled.
“Full tank, you’re good to go.”
I didn’t check.
I’d done that route a hundred times.
And now I was standing in the dark doing the math in my head.
It was 82 degrees outside.
In the middle of the night.
Ice cream has to stay at 10 below zero.

I didn’t know how long it had been off.
Ten minutes?
Two hours?
If that load warmed up, nobody would care whose fault it was.
$90,000 of product, rejected at the door.
And my name on the bill of lading.

The closest truck stop with fuel was 19 miles away.
I didn’t even put my boots on right.
Just drove.
Filled the re**er tank.
Bled the fuel lines.
Tried to start it.
Nothing.
Tried again.
Nothing.
Third time, it caught.
I’ve never been so happy to hear a diesel engine in my life.

Then I opened the trailer door just enough to check the temp with my own thermometer.
7 below.
Three degrees from losing everything.
The load had been pre-cooled so cold at the shipper, it bought me just enough time.

I delivered at 6:52 a.m.
The receiver checked the temperature.
Signed.
Said, “Nice cold load, driver.”
I just nodded.
He had no idea.

Here’s the lesson I paid for with zero sleep:
“It’s full” is not a fuel reading.
“It’s loaded right” is not a weight ticket.
“It’s ready” is not a trailer check.
Everybody means well.
But nobody else is going to be standing in that parking lot at 3 a.m.
You are.
So look for yourself.
Every single time.
