43 years ago today, August 26, 1983, Strange Brew premiered in U.S. theaters.

Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas starred as brothers Bob and Doug McKenzie, reprising the beer-loving "hoser" characters they created on SCTV, with Max von Sydow as the sinister Brewmeister Smith, Paul Dooley as Claude Elsinore, Lynne Griffin as Pam Elsinore and Angus MacInnes in a supporting role. Moranis and Thomas also wrote and directed the film, marking both men's feature directing debut.

After getting into trouble trying to scam free beer from a local shop, Bob and Doug take jobs at the Elsinore Brewery, where they discover Brewmeister Smith is testing a mind-control drug on the beer while scheming with Pam's uncle to seize the company following her father's mysterious death. The film loosely parodies "Hamlet," down to the brewery's name. It was shot in Canada, where it opened a week earlier, on August 19, 1983.
