International Code of Signals

The International Code of Signals (INTERCO) is an international system of signals and codes for use by vessels to communicate important messages regarding safety of navigation and related matters. Signals can be sent by flaghoist, signal lamp ("blinker"), flag semaphore, radiotelegraphy, and radiotelephony. The International Code is the most recent evolution of a wide variety of maritime flag signalling systems.

Broad Reach Canada is a charity providing development opportunities through sailing for youth aged 12–30 with programs that include day sailing on large boats in Toronto and overnight sailing voyages. Their goal is to equip participants with skills, knowledge and community belonging, through rarely accessible sailing experience.

Their Ships2Shores offers that rare opportunity to underrepresented youth to acquaint themselves with the great lakes, the Atlantic coast or St Lawrence river, while experiencing sailing, tall ship voyages, hands-on learning, building confidence, leadership skills, self-identity, courage and resilience.

The ships sail often day and night, docking at ports along the way. When aboard, the participants work alongside experienced ship’s crew, taking care of the ship, voyage goals, meals, safety, cleanliness, participating in ship’s company activities and having a lot of fun. The voyages schedule is still being developed.

The program is delivered in partnership with Canada’s top youth sail training organizations: BRIGS Youth Sail Training (Hamilton), Tall Ships Expeditions Canada (Kingston), Bytowne Brigantine (Ottawa), ÉcoMaris (Québec), and the Nova Scotia Sea School.

Young people interested in the program must commit to completing 120 hours after registering. These hours include 20 hours for orientation, registration, volunteer service planning, workshops, evaluation, surveys, and presentations; 5-7 hours/day sailing, and the rest on volunteer service of your choice, in the community.

Heading out on the water this long weekend? We cannot stress strongly enough: WEAR YOUR LIFE JACKET OR PFD.

Whether you are paddling a kayak or canoe, or have a "little horsepower" for your boat, falling overboard or being capsized are the leading causes of boating-related deaths - every year.

But a life jacket can't save your life unless you wear it. Even if you are unconscious, that life jacket can keep your head above the surface. Plus, the water is still very cold and that means even strong swimmers could be unable to reach safety without a PFD.

Don't leave it jammed under a seat - wear it, and make sure others wear theirs too.

Boating Safety Week is May 17-23. Please help make this boating season a safer one.
