Bought a puppy from a US breeder? Here is the detail that catches almost everyone.

If your puppy is under 8 months and travelling without you, a licensed US vet has to examine it and issue the health certificate, and the puppy must reach the first Canadian port of entry within 72 hours of that exam. Not 10 days. Get it wrong and you can be turned back at the border.

A puppy riding with its owner needs only proof of current rabies vaccination. From 12 weeks of age the puppy needs a valid rabies certificate, and from 8 months no health certificate is needed at all.

Bring the sale receipt (date, description of the puppy, the words "non breeding", and the price paid) and be ready to pay GST on the purchase price.

Flying a puppy into Buffalo for a family in Ontario? This is the route for it. It's our western New York gateway, the counterpart to Detroit for buyers in the Golden Horseshoe.

We meet the puppy at Buffalo Niagara or Niagara Falls NY, handle the customs entry, and cross the Peace Bridge into Ontario. The handoff happens on the Ontario side, in the Fort Erie to Niagara area. About 30 km and 45 minutes.

The price starts at $490 CAD. That is a minimum, not a flat rate. It covers the airport meet, the customs entry, the crossing, and the handoff. Onward delivery past there is quoted separately, so tell us the pickup point and the destination and we'll confirm the number before anyone commits.

Two skittish rescue beagles. A CargoJet flight from St. John's to Hamilton, a pickup in the middle of the night, an overnight stay, a border crossing, and a meet-up in West Virginia.

Boston, MA to Fredericton, NB: $1,525 CAD, flat.

This is the route for a New England breeder placing a puppy with a Maritime family. We meet the puppy at Boston Logan cargo or take a ground handoff in the city, clear the entry with our broker, cross at Houlton, and deliver to the door anywhere in New Brunswick.

680 km, about seven and a half hours. Boston is the longest of our four US gateways, and the price reflects that. Nova Scotia, PEI and Quebec destinations are quoted separately.

🐾 Planning to bring a puppy, kitten or other furry family member home this fall or winter? Let’s talk dates BEFORE you book the flight.

Holiday crowds and colder weather can limit how pets travel, especially those too large to fly in the cabin.

✈️ Christmas travel restrictions
Air Canada’s published holiday restriction runs December 18–January 4 for pets travelling as checked baggage or cargo.

WestJet also stops accepting checked pets December 18–January 4. Its cargo rules vary by aircraft, so an available flight doesn’t necessarily mean an available pet transport.

❄️ Cold-weather restrictions start earlier
From November 1–March 31, Air Canada does not accept checked pets on its Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. Pets under 10 lb also cannot travel in the baggage compartment during that period, or whenever temperatures are 0°C or below.

☀️ Heading north from somewhere warm?
Some U.S. airports remain under seasonal pet restrictions through October or November. Sweater weather here doesn’t mean every route is open there!

These restrictions don’t automatically prevent in-cabin travel, but your pet must meet the airline’s age, size and carrier requirements, and pet space must be available.

🐶 Our advice: plan early and leave room for a backup plan. A different flight, travel date or ground connection may be needed. Weather delays can also mean extra accommodation and pet-care costs.
