🚨 If you're flying a pet to Europe this fall, read this before you book.

The EU rewrote its pet travel rules and CFIA updated its guidance on August 27. There's a hard cutoff on September 30, 2026, after that date, the old animal health certificates are dead. CFIA can't endorse them, and EU border control won't accept them.

But here's the change almost nobody has caught:

❌ Your pet can no longer fly to the EU alone as a "pet."

The option for an animal to travel unaccompanied as a non-commercial movement has ENDED. And that one applies right now, not September 30.

Your pet has to be directly accompanied by you. Or by an authorised person travelling within five days of your own trip, carrying written authorization in the EU's new required format.

If neither of those is true? Your shipment is now COMMERCIAL. Different certificate, different requirements, and your establishment of origin needs a CFIA-assigned registration number that takes real time to obtain.

That's months of lead time, not weeks. 😬

And the rule that ruins the most trips still hasn't changed: your pet must be microchipped BEFORE the rabies vaccine. Chipped afterward? The EU treats that vaccine and every one since as invalid. Not delayed. Invalid.

Non-compliance on arrival means the animal gets sent back, isolated at your expense, or worse. That's the actual text of the regulation.
