"My first-ever polar expedition was to Svalbard in June 2025 and it will not be my last! The archipelago of Svalbard belongs to Norway and sits approximately halfway to the North Pole. I started my adventure in Helsinki, Finland for a few days of Nordic culture before taking a charter flight to Longyearbyen, Norway to embark on an 10 day journey in and around Svalbard on the Ocean Explorer.

I was excited about the unknown but had no idea how enamoured I would be with the peacefulness and beauty of the Arctic! The journey was filled with breathtaking wildlife encounters and unforgettable experiences. From the moment I set foot on the ship, I was captivated by the sheer beauty and diversity of the Arctic landscape and its wildlife."

Travel can be harmful. It's sad, but true. The way forward is understanding how it is harmful and how you can make a difference.

Sustainable tourism aims to have a positive impact and not a negative one. It is not 'good enough' to do more positive than harm. We need to work on doing WAY less harm.

Travel can be harmful in many ways, but it is also a desperately needed source of income around the world. The answer is not to stop travelling, but instead to travel responsibly.

Here are a few ways you may not realize travel is doing harm and ways you can help make a difference.

😟 Over-tourism disrupts local lives and ruins historic sites. It also creates inflated pricing that locals are stuck with when the tourists are gone.

πŸ’ͺ Choose off-the-beaten track and lesser-visited destinations. Explore small communities instead of only the big cities. Travel in shoulder season.

😟 Resorts & Large Ships give you a place to relax, but your hard-earned money is lining the pockets of the rich instead of helping those who need it most.

πŸ’ͺ Choose smaller ships, local hotels and eco-lodges. Look for company sustainability practices and find out how they are helping the places
they visit.

😟 Carbon emissions from flights and transportation are contributing to global warming.

πŸ’ͺ Fly economy class, take direct flights and use train travel whenever possible. Offset carbon emissions when you can't
omit them.

🌍 Travel can be a force for good. The world needs tourism more than ever. Let's make positive changes together.

Tell us in the comments how you will commit to more sustainable and responsible travel in the future. We'd love to hear from you.

Sometimes you get into funny situations when you travel. I got in to many! Check out our past blog post about snorkelling in the Galapagos Islands - Lifejacket Complication https://lovethewayyoutravel.com/lifejacket-complication/

Sometimes when we travel, funny things happen. Sometimes inappropriate or embarrassing things happen. And sometimes, they are worth laughing at. I’m a pretty strong swimmer as I used to be a lifeguard. I’m not always 100% confident in open water though. I know that I can swim and I’m not going...

Did you know I have a soft spot in my heart for the Dominican Republic? I lived there for two months and studied Spanish a few times. Check out our past blog post about my experience at a small Eco-lodge I visited in the mountains. Natural Beauty https://lovethewayyoutravel.com/natural-beauty/

As I sit in my bed in a palapa this evening, under my mosquito netting, the world around me is singing. It is a constant rhythm of crickets with the symbolic chirps of various varieties of frogs whose music crescendos and minuends with the fresh tranquil breeze. Here I am in the mountains between Pu...

So many people get stuck in dreaming about big, epic, life-changing travel and then they get wrapped up in their day-to-day lives, overwhelmed by the planning, not having anyone to go with, or take shorter trips along the way, dwindling their bucket-list money pot. Let this be your sign to stop putting your A-list travel dreams on hold for B-list plans!

Our world is changing right before our eyes. Ice is melting, temperatures are warming, oceans and weather patterns are changing. Animals are losing their homes. If you'd like to visit Canada's Northwest Passage before it is irreversibly changed by new shipping routes and continued climate change, I invite you to join me on an expedition of a lifetime ... and one you can feel good about!

Next Aug/Sept Shari will be heading to Iceland, Greenland and into Canada's Northwest Passage, hosting a group of friends and clients through a 17 day journey to see incredible Arctic Scenery & wildlife while supporting conservation of oceans and wild places.

If you'd like to meet our Northern Canadian communities, adventure by zodiac to see the wildlife, hike on Arctic tundra, paddle a kayak through icy waters, learn about conservation and do the polar dip in the Arctic ... What are you waiting for? By the way, it's not THAT cold as we travel at the end of Summer and it's an experience like no other!

We've already sold 8 or our 12 spots and we're looking for 4 more people to fill up our group block. We have EXCLUSIVE rates available, only through Love the Way You Travel until June 20th. We've got room for couples, solo travellers who want their own room, or solo travellers who are willing to share with someone else.

Don't wait. Now's the time!
