My name is Christine Lafazanos and I am a Certified Life-Cycle Celebrant and Officiant based in Guelph, Ontario. I handcraft custom wedding and funeral ceremonies that are either secular, spiritual or multi faith. I do this work because I believe ceremony holds an invitation; it creates an oppo

rtunity for mindful reflection on the important connections and events in our lives. Gathering together, we strengthen our relationships, stand grounded in meaning, and foster gratitude and ultimately personal and community resilience. As a trained speaker, theatre artist and actor, I would be thrilled to lend my talent and experience to help you bring your non-traditional theme wedding to walking and breathing life (or to stumbling undead, in the case of a zombie wedding!). I always seek to be an inclusive and welcoming celebrant, sensitive to people’s needs and experiences based on age, race, ethnicity, ability, religious or spiritual beliefs, sexuality, gender identity/expression, socio-economic status or political beliefs. As a queer-identified person, I’m an active ally to folks who identify as queer, lesbian, gay, trans, gender nonconforming, two-spirit, kinky, and polyamorous. I endeavour to grow a green business. Wherever possible, I will:
• purchase needed materials second-hand or from ethical and sustainable sources
• travel by foot, bike, or public transit
• minimize energy use and waste
• support other local, independent businesses

Together in the peace of their backyard we gathered to honour and celebrate their love. This was an early COVID wedding, when there was a five person limit for weddings–the couple, their two witnesses (in the case of a legal wedding), and me, the officiant. I still officiated quite a number of ceremonies in 2020 and 2021 because for some folks, the gathering restrictions created an opportunity to have a small gathering without the pressure to have a lot of people, or a bigger, more costly event to plan and host. Some people are super excited to host their community when they get married. And some folks would much rather a quiet, intimate, more casual celebration.

I’m glad that COVID gave more people permission to have micro weddings. There is too much pressure to have weddings look a certain way. I’ve done plenty of tiny gatherings of a few people in the forest, on a picnic blanket near the river, or standing right in the river!

In general, my wish is for you to know you can create ceremony–of any kind–in the way and manner that works for you and your people. I would like ceremony to be a source of support for those who choose it–instead of a stressful set of obligations and conventions. And that includes permission to create ceremony for the milestones, healing, or grieving that you need and that matter to you. Who says that the only ceremonies we can have are weddings and funerals? They’re just the most common in our current secular culture. Have a commitment ceremony with your best friend! Or to yourself! Or have an annual ritual to dedicate yourself to serving our collective liberation! We get to choose what to mark with ritual.

One of the gifts of perimenopause for me is that it made my hair go from pin straight to wavy! So fun! It also significantly increased my anxiety and hence has encouraged me to find the approaches that now have drastically reduced my anxiety. Wild ride!

The shift at menopause is one of those changes that our western mainstream culture feels lacking in meaningful ritual or processes to honour or sit with the myriad of feelings and experiences that can arise.

I’m curious how other folks are making meaning of this time. Is ceremony something you have offered yourself or been part of for other folks in your life? I know ritual (solo or in group) isn’t an approach that resonates with everyone.

I’ve pictured offering a menopause labyrinth walk (or several walks), to create a meditative space in community where we can reflect on what this transition is inviting or asking of us. Is that something people local to me would find supportive? From a q***r, gender inclusive perspective obviously.

“Can you officiate as the musician Hozier as a Woodland Fairy?” the couple asked me. Can I?! With delight! I will also happily spend about 20 hours sewing a vest and adorning it with leaves and lichen and butterflies. It was so fun to gently weave the character through the ceremony—referencing it a few times without trying to take centre stage away from the couple’s story.

Hi, I’m Chris (they/them)! I’m a Guelph-based Officiant/Ceremony Guide.

Ceremony feels like one potent antidote to the lies of capitalism which triumphs the role of the individual and denies our interdependence, has us chasing stuff as a false path to fulfillment, and treats busyness as a form of martyrdom.

Let us instead slow down together and enter the circle of ceremony; to pause and reflect on our stories and make meaning of the significant relationships, milestones, and transitions we move through. Let us create spaces to grieve together, or spaces to lean into life’s joy. To have who we are and the journey we are on seen and honoured by our community of loved ones. To reweave ourselves to the fabric of the ecosystems which sustain us.

As a q***r, nonbinary, polyamorous, neurodivergent, witchy and artsy person, I’m passionate about serving folks in my communities who are too often marginalized by mainstream norms and conventions of ceremony. We’re done with sexist wedding traditions. We’re creating ceremonies that celebrate q***r and trans joy. We’re relearning how to lean on each other as we grieve. We’re reclaiming ancestral ritual traditions.

In the past 11 years I’ve officiated over 400 ceremonies including weddings and commitment ceremonies, celebrations of life and graveside memorials, child welcoming or adoption ceremonies, divorce ceremonies, equinox and solstice rituals, and ceremonies to honour trans and nonbinary folks.

I’m someone who loves a good dance party, can often be found on a walk by the river or in the forest, is loving my new regular poetry writing practice, and is excitedly learning to read and write Greek (my dad’s first language). I’m endlessly fascinated by spirituality, religion and ritual. I’m also endlessly fascinated by science and ecology. One of my favourite facts is that 100 trillion neutrinos pass harmlessly through your body every second!

One of the fantastic benefits of keeping your vows a surprise from each other is that you get reactions like this. I mean, I had read both of their vows already and I was still cracking up.

This frightful Halloween wedding happened outdoors, on the night of a full moon. So naturally, I made all of the guests howl at the full moon together. Because when I do theme weddings it’s not just the look, it’s a full character and the whole ceremony is written in that voice. It’s wickedly fun. 👻🎃💀
