Gimli harbour roll call.
And for the record, the harbourmaster doesn’t have favourites…except maybe the Vakta (what can we say, she saves lives!)

150 years of fishing history:
Beginning in 1875, Icelandic settlers built this industry on whitefish, pickerel, and sauger.
The Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation was established in 1969 and Manitoba’s quota system followed shortly after, keeping Gimli’s fishery thriving today.

Taking care of business…
taking care of weeds.

Last week the Harbour Authority cleared weeds from an area used by the Gimli Yacht Club’s sailing program.

W**d removal on Lake Winnipeg isn’t as simple as it sounds. Before any of it started, sign off was needed at both the federal and provincial level: federal approval to collect,
provincial approval to transport,
and an AIS (Aquatic Invasive Species) permit from the Manitoba government.

Why the red tape? W**ds pulled from the lake bed can carry hitchhikers like zebra mussels and spiny water flea, invasive species Manitoba is working to keep from spreading further across its waterways.

Follow along for more harbour content!

People young and old come to the pier to fish.
Some set usp to sit all day, others try their luck for an hour and move on.
Either way, they’re casting from the Main Pier seawall, out toward the lake (since the inner harbour’s reserved for boats).

A quick note for anyone planning to join them: in Manitoba, anglers 16 and up need a valid fishing licence, with some exceptions for youth, seniors, and others. Licences are easy to grab online through Manitoba eLicensing or at local shops before you head out.

Rules can vary by season and waterbody, so check the current Manitoba Anglers’ Guide before you cast. 🎣
