ATTENTION: Muscowpetung Membership

This is a report on the recent arbitration hearings regarding the April 3, 2026 Election Appeals.

As you may know, a number of appeals were filed in relation to the conduct of the April 3, 2026 Muscowpetung Election. The appeals revolved around two grounds:

1) whether corrupt election practices (vote-buying) took place during the election process; and

2) whether the Chief Electoral Officer correctly interpreted and applied our Custom Election Act, or if there was an error that would have affected the outcome of the vote.

These appeals were heard before an arbitrator on June 1st and 2nd, 2026 through two full-day hearings. The hearing was originally scheduled to conclude on Thursday June 4th with the presentation of closing written and oral arguments. However, given the extensive amount of evidence filed, both parties requested an extension in order to have enough time to review all of the evidence and complete their final arguments. The Arbitrator acknowledge these points and agreed it would be unreasonable to conclude the hearing on June 4th as originally scheduled because of the extensive amount of evidence.

In terms of next steps, the Arbitrator confirmed that the final submissions will be made approximately a week following the receipt of a transcript of the in-person portion of the hearing process. The transcript is expected to be received on Monday. It is expected that final submissions from all parties will be due shortly after. After that point, a decision will likely be rendered within two weeks from the date final submissions are made.

The Decision will be posted for members as soon as it is provided by the Appeal Arbitrator.

Bringing Our Sacred Belongings Home

Dr. Shane Keepness and Julian Stonechild of Muscowpetung Saulteaux Nation have been leading our Nation’s repatriation efforts to reclaim sacred items and cultural artifacts that hold deep historical and spiritual significance. This arrow is currently housed at the Manitoba Museum.

Through the support and commitment of Chief and Council, who have made repatriation a priority for our Nation, Muscowpetung leadership is working alongside Dr. Keepness and Julian Stonechild to bring these important cultural belongings home to the community. By returning these sacred items, we strengthen our connection to our ancestors, preserve our history, and ensure future generations can learn from and celebrate their heritage.
