The Kicking Horse Canyon Phase 4 Project was completed this past July, and final touch-ups along the alignment are now finished.

People travelling the Trans-Canada Highway through the canyon are now on a wider, safer and more efficient highway.

While the speed limit has been posted at 100 km/h, motorists are reminded to please respect the roadway and other road users, drive to conditions and be alert to the presence of wildlife.

Please note that with the project now complete, this page will no longer be monitored.

For any questions related to the highway conditions, please check DriveBC.ca.

Some final touch-ups along the alignment, such as tree and shrub planting, will be required this month, as cooler temperatures in the canyon will help freshly planted greenery survive and flourish.

Some weather dependent lane reductions will be required.

Always verify information with DriveBC.ca before travelling.

A special thank you to all the Kicking Horse Canyon Phase 4 Project’s hard working crew members.

Through their hard work we have now:
• Upgraded approximately 4.8 km of highway through the most challenging section of the canyon to improve safety
• Realigned 13 curves and widened the highway to four lanes with median barrier and wider shoulders to accommodate cyclists
• Mitigated rock fall and avalanche hazards with bridges, rock catchment ditches and other measures
• Added wildlife exclusion fencing and wildlife passage opportunities to reduce vehicle-animal collisions

We are so proud of all our team’s accomplishments!

At Dart Creek Forest Service Road, an ungulate guard, often called a cattle guard or Texas Gate, forms part of the barrier.

The barrier is designed to help prevent wildlife from entering the highway, while still allowing vehicles to access the forestry road.

To get to the other side of the highway, animal passage has been provided under the major bridge structures.

Major construction of the fourth and final phase to complete the remaining – and most difficult – 4.8 kilometre section of the Kicking Horse Canyon Project began in early 2021.

Crews have turned a narrow, winding two-lane mountain road into a modern four-lane, 100 km/h standard highway.

Take a look at this video to see just how far we’ve come!

Crews have achieved a gentler and more consistent grade on the new Kicking Horse Canyon Phase 4 highway alignment!

The new alignment now has a maximum elevation of 1,005.2 m and a minimum elevation of 893.9 m across its linear distance of 4.8 km.

Many sharp curves have also been eliminated with the project's structures. Have a look at the realigned, safer highway!

Some final touch-ups along the alignment, such as tree and shrub planting, will be required this month, as cooler temperatures in the canyon will help freshly planted greenery survive and flourish.

Some weather dependent lane reductions will be required.
