Our Yukon and Alaska Land of the Midnight Sun tour has come to an end today with our travels south into the more populated areas. The further south we went, the more restaurants we found to stop at for breaks, and the more traffic we found! Need to take the bad with the good!

Day 15-16 - Yukon and Alaska Land of the Midnight Sun

We’re on our way south, but the adventures continue!

We visited the Yukon Transportation Museum and were enthralled with all the amazing history of transportation in this Northern Territory, from dog sleds and skin boats up to trains, automobiles, buses and airplanes.

We started back along the Alaska Highway, stopping to picnic by Teslin Lake. After lunch we headed eastward (highway south) to finally arrive in Watson Lake. Some went for a walk around Wye Lake, others just explored around the town.

After our night in Watson Lake, we travelled south of the 60th parallel and entered BC for a bittersweet parting from the lands of the Midnight Sun. Our first stop for the day was at Liard River Hot Springs where some went for a swim, and we had a fantastic moose sighting, right by the boardwalk! We had another picnic lunch and then hit the road. Some rain came into the Northern Rocky Mountains and our stop at Summit Lake, highest point of the Alaska Highway, was wet and cold. Fort Nelson ultimately was our goal, which was warm and sunny in our arrival. We enjoyed a farewell dinner with great camaraderie at the hotel restaurant and we’ll move on again tomorrow.

Day 14 - Yukon and Alaska The Land of the Midnight Sun

Whitehorse to Skagway and return

A spectacular day unfolded. We set out under cloudy skies, which gradually started to clear as we headed south towards the coastal mountains. Our morning break was in Carcross, located on Lake Bennett, part of the water portion of the route the stampeders took in the spring of 1898 to reach the Klondike gold fields.

We travelled through some fantastic scenery as we moved into the coastal mountains, and arrived at Fraser BC to board the White Pass and Yukon narrow gauge railway - the scenic railway of the world. The trip took us just over 1.5 hours over the White Pass and down into the temperate rainforest of the Tongass National Forest and found ourselves in Skagway for some free time. Skagway developed during the gold rush as the gateway to the White Pass. After free time there, we returned to our hotel in Whitehorse with one interesting stop in the way home at the Carcross Desert. Tomorrow we start back down the Alaska Highway!

Day 13 - Yukon and Alaska Land of the Midnight Sun

Tok AK to Whitehorse YT

Today was a big travel day, heading back to Canada.

Our first stop was at the Tetlin Wildlife Refuge visitor center, then we continued to the border and took photos at the Welcome to Alaska/Welcome to Yukon signs. These are located at the physical border location. We had to continue another almost 20 minutes to get to the Beaver Creek customs office to get processed for admittance back into Canada.

Lunch was a picnic at Lake Creek Campground, and was fantastic. It was rainy off and on today, but held off for our picnic.

Continuing along, we found ourselves driving along Kluane Lake and eventually making our afternoon break at Haines Junction. After a long day of travel, we arrived no worse for wear at the Gold Rush Inn at Whitehorse.

Day 12 - Yukon and Alaska Land of the Midnight Sun

Anchorage to Tok

A travel day today, with a morning stop at the Musk Ox Farm in Palmer. Palmer was an area that was set up as agricultural colony by the US Federal Government during the Great Depression. As part of the New Deal, farmers from Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan of Scandinavian descent were resettled in the Palmer area. The Musk Ox farm was one of those farms that has been converted into a non profit operation raising these arctic barrens creatures for study and to harvest the Qiviut, the warm under hair that has such high value as a soft thin wool that is incredibly warm.

We continued up the Glenn Highway after, and came upon the Matanuska Glacier, which has had a stable position for over 400 years, neither retreating or advancing. After some photo stops in this area, we continued to lunch at Eureka Lodge at Eureka Summit. Fantastic meals, served quickly and in an organized manner. A great stop in a remote area.

Our afternoon break came quickly in Glennallen, and then the bumpy bouncy drive on the Tok Cutoff to return to Tok for one last overnight before returning to Canada tomorrow.

Day 11 - Yukon and Alaska Land of the Midnight Sun

Anchorage - Prince William Sound cruise

Today, we departed Anchorage on the Seward Highway. We travelled along Turnagain Arm, one of the most scenic drives in Alaska. We made photo stops at Beluga Point and Bird Point, two spectacular photo opportunities. Turnagain Arm is known for having the second highest tides in the world. Today, we passed by very close to High Tide, which happened about 20 minutes before our travels, rising over 32 feet! Later in the day, on our way home, we passed by about 45 minutes after low tide, which was -0.6 feet.

Our main goal was arriving in Whittier to take the Glacier Express cruise on Prince William Sound. This is located in a temperate rainforest, but there were barely any clouds in site on this bluebird day. We got up close and personal with two tidewater glaciers, glaciers that come right down to the water, plus saw a number of others - and also a little bit of wildlife viewing.

It was a great day of sightseeing, helped, of course, by the excellent conditions. After all this, we returned to Anchorage and saw a tidal bore on the Turnagain arm, a phenomenon caused by the outgoing tide interacting with the new incoming tide, raising a wave as the new tide pushes in.

Day 10 - Yukon and Alaska Land of the Midnight Sun

Fairbanks to Anchorage

A travel day for our intrepid group today. We’re in a cooler, cloudier weather pattern now. We headed south on the Parks Highway, passing Nenana and arriving at the Denali Park Village for our morning break. We continued south through a corner of Denali National Park and Preserve, and eventually entered into Denali State Park. The clouds were not on our side for viewing Denali, the Great One as the name translates from Athabaskan. 20300 feet high approximately, and the highest point in North America, was hiding in the clouds entirely from the north view, and we caught a couple of brief glimpses of him from the south view in little breaks in the cloud. I was asked to post a photo from a previous year so people could see it, so check that out in the photo gallery.

Our afternoon stop was at the Iditarod Headquarters just outside Wasilla, where 21 of our group took a short ride on a cart behind a sled dog team. Finally, we headed into Anchorage and arrived at our downtown hotel, the Anchorage Hilton. A great day with scenery, even though we didn’t get to see Denali - it’s something that isn’t uncommon in the summer months for Denali to be clouded over.

On Saturday, we had a rare occasion for Nagel Tours - we ran a day trip to take the Battle River Train Excursion from Kelsey to Heisler. They called this trip their Historic Heisler Hotel Excursion. Driver Dave and Tour Director Sharon took this group to the boarding spot in Kelsey, just outside Camrose, and then rode the train to Heisler, home of the World’s Largest Baseball Glove, and return.
