For professional drivers, no two trips are exactly the same. Weather, traffic, construction, visibility and road conditions can change quickly, and experienced drivers know they need to adjust with them.
Today’s safety tip is from Landtran Logistics Safety Manager Will Pina.
“Safety Tip: Adjust your speed. Increase your space. Drive for the conditions.”
Slowing down, increasing following distance and staying alert give drivers more time to react and help protect everyone sharing the road. At Landtran, safety is built into every mile. It starts with skilled drivers making smart decisions for the conditions. That commitment to safety inspired this poem by Trevor Wright, which Will shared:
Ode to the Class 1 Driver
The master of the highway wide,
With steady hands upon the wheel
And miles and miles left to ride.
Before the sun has kissed the sky,
You’re up and getting underway,
With coffee close and mirrors set,
You start another working day.
Through mountain passes, rain and snow,
Through city streets and country lanes,
You face the wind, the freezing cold,
The heat, the traffic, and the rains.
You know your rig from hood to hub,
You hear the sounds that others miss.
You check the tires, lights, and brakes,
Because safety starts with moments like this.
You carry more than freight and steel;
You carry trust with every load.
You share the road with those who rush,
Yet keep your patience on the road.
You know that speed can wait its turn,
That following distance matters too.
You understand that getting there is only good
If you arrive safe and sound.
You battle schedules, docks, and clocks,
With paperwork that never ends.
You back into the tightest spots
And make it look like you’ve got ten friends.
You’ve learned the language of the road:
The wave, the flash, the truck-stop nod.
A quiet brotherhood of drivers
Who know this job can be demanding, by God.
So here’s to every Class 1 Driver,
Professional, capable, and true.
For every mile you safely travel,
There are people counting on you.
May your roads be clear, your loads secure,
Your inspections quick and clean.
May your coffee stay hot, your brakes stay cool,
And your truck run like a dream.
And when the long day finally ends,
And you park that rig for the night,
Take pride in every mile behind.
You did the job, and you did it right.
