New federal and Northwest Territories funding has been announced to improve healthcare access across NWT communities, an important investment in bringing care closer to the people who need it.

In the North, access depends not only on healthcare infrastructure, but on the reliability of the supply chain behind it. A health centre can only deliver care if medicines remain within temperature specification, medical equipment arrives ready for use, and essential supplies reach the community when they are needed. That often means planning around limited service frequency, weather, long distances and fewer recovery options when disruptions occur.

This is where logistics becomes part of healthcare access itself.

Infrastructure in the North is about more than concrete, asphalt and runways. It’s about creating capacity and opportunity in the communities that call the North home.

The recently announced investment of up to $49.5 million in the Inuvik (Mike Zubko) Airport is an important step forward for the Western Arctic, strengthening a critical transportation hub and improving the movement of people, essential goods and cargo throughout the region.

For BBE, this one hits close to home. Quite literally as in addition to local warehousing, we’re on the ground in Inuvik at the airport where we offer ground handling services for aircraft.

Federal ministers announced up to $49.5 million in federal funding to modernize the Mike Zubko Airport in Inuvik on Monday. The money will go toward giving the existing cracked runway a consistent paved surface and toward replacing the access road with asphalt.

🛏️ Located at 274 Inuvialuit Lane on the Arctic Ocean, Saliqmiut offers 17 single rooms and 2 two-bedroom suites with local art throughout the property. For a community once reached only by air or ice road, having a purpose-built place to stay changes what is possible, for industry crews, researchers, government visitors, and travellers exploring the Inuvialuit region.

BBE is proud to support the Saliqmiut Project Team in Tuktoyaktuk and Inuvialuit Regional Corporation with logistics and procurement, through our partnership with Inuvialuit Development Corporation (IDC). The 2026 Arctic Development Expo will focus on “Arctic Security – A Shared Responsibility,” with discussions spanning northern leadership, Indigenous leadership, defence operations, military infrastructure, cyber preparedness, drones, satellite sites, skills development, and economic development for Arctic security.
