Proud to be an ongoing contributor to CAMs impressive vault of information for seniors

August 21 is World Senior Citizens Day 💚

When older Canadians move, it’s about more than boxes and trucks. It’s memories, health, safety, and peace of mind. That’s why the Canadian Association of Movers (CAM) and the Canadian Association of Retired Persons (CARP) created Moving Seniors Safely – a library of practical resources to help seniors and their families plan, downsize, avoid scams, and choose trusted professionals.

From checklists and tip sheets to videos on planning ahead, hiring senior move managers, and staying safe from moving scams, this program is designed with older adults and their adult children in mind.

Love this.

Something I've come to believe after enough of these.

There's a reason a family shouldn't be their own general contractor on a parent's move.

It isn't about competence. The daughters who call us are more than capable. They run households, careers, their own families. They could learn to schedule the movers and the auctioneer and the cleaner and the realtor if they had to.

But the person coordinating seven vendors can't also be the person sitting with Mom while she decides whether to keep the quilt. You can't run the job and grieve it at the same time. One of the two always loses.

So we take the general-contractor seat. We hire the trades, run the schedule, chase the details. That frees you to be what the vendors can't be, which is her daughter, in the room, present for the part that actually matters.

Let us be the project manager, and you be the family member.

If you're carrying both jobs right now, which one is getting shortchanged?

Love this post by fellow NASMM member!

Think about how a kitchen remodel actually works.

You don't hire the plumber, the electrician, the cabinet installer, and the tile guy separately and then stand in the middle making their schedules line up. You hire one general contractor. He hires them. He runs them. You get a finished kitchen.

A senior move has just as many trades. The sorters. The movers. The estate-sale and auction people. The donation pickups. The haulers. The cleaners. The realtor. Handle it yourself and you're the general contractor on the hardest week of your family's life, chasing seven vendors who have never met each other.

That's the job we take. One coordinator hires and runs every trade the move needs. You get one plan, one quote, one person who answers the phone. The move gets finished the way a good remodel does, by someone whose whole job is running it.

You wouldn't GC your own kitchen. You don't have to GC your mom's move either.

Where are you in this right now, standing in the middle of it or looking for someone to run it?
