General MacKenzie - There are soldiers. And then there are soldiers who define what it means to wear the uniform.
General Lewis MacKenzie is the second kind.
His leadership during the Siege of Sarajevo in 1992 is the stuff of legend. Commanding UN forces in one of the most complex and dangerous peacekeeping environments in modern history, MacKenzie demonstrated exactly the kind of calm, principled, courageous leadership that Canada has always asked of its finest officers. The world watched. Canada was proud.
When a man like that looks at what happened to Jess Larochelle, to William MacDonald, to David Quick, to Patrick Tower, and to dozens of other soldiers whose extraordinary valour was never fully recognized β and says Canada must do better - that is not a political statement.
That is a verdict from someone who has stood in the fire himself.
General MacKenzie has endorsed the call for an Independent Military Honours Review Board. He understands that how a nation recognizes its warriors is a direct reflection of its character. He understands that leaving heroism unacknowledged is not just an injustice to the individual soldier
β it is a statement about who we are as a country.
We are proud and honoured to have his voice behind this cause.
The government has to respond. Stand with General MacKenzie
today.
