There’s something powerful about having something to look forward to. 🚴‍♂️🌎

A ride with friends. A trip on the calendar. A new destination. A challenge you’ve never tried before.

Staying active isn’t only about fitness. It gives us reasons to get out, connect with people, explore and keep experiencing more of life.

That idea is at the heart of PEDAL & PORT.

Our latest Journal story explores why active people always seem to have something ahead of them and why that may matter even more as we get older.

🚴 The goal isn’t to stay young. The goal is to stay capable.

Cycling is a big part of my life, but I’ve come to realize the bike isn’t enough.

That’s why strength training is still part of my week, even during cycling season. 💪

I want to keep riding. Keep travelling. Keep exploring. And keep saying yes to new adventures for many years to come.

My latest PEDAL & PORT Journal article looks at cycling, strength, friendship and what it really means to stay active as we get older.

Ride for the Long Run: How Cycling Can Help Us Age Well

80 YEARS. 80 KILOMETRES. 🚴❤️

Yesterday was a pretty special reminder of what an active lifestyle can look like at any age.

To celebrate Ron’s 80th birthday, a group of friends got together for an 80 km ride.

80 years old. 80 kilometres. Surrounded by friends.

Pretty incredible. 👏

But what I loved most wasn’t just the distance.

It was the laughter, the friendships, the encouragement and simply being out there together doing something we love.

That’s a big part of what inspired PEDAL & PORT.

Staying active. Exploring new places. Building friendships. Sharing experiences. And continuing to create great memories at every stage of life.

Because adventure doesn’t have an age limit. 🚴🌎❤️

Congratulations, Ron.

80 years young. 80 km strong.

🚴🇪🇺 Thinking about a cycling holiday in Europe? Where would you start?

The Danube? Amsterdam to Bruges? France’s Loire Valley? Portugal? Croatia?

Your first cycling holiday shouldn’t leave you wondering what you’ve gotten yourself into. 😄

It should leave you thinking:

“I can’t wait to do that again.”

I’ve put together 7 European cycling experiences worth considering for your first cycling holiday, including what each is best for, what to watch for, and where an e-bike might make the experience even better.

🚴 E Bike or regular bike for a cycling holiday in Europe?

It’s becoming one of the most interesting choices when planning a cycling trip.

An e bike can make hills and longer days more manageable, while a regular bike gives you that familiar traditional cycling experience.

But there really isn’t one right answer.

The better question is: which bike will help you enjoy the journey more?

I explore the differences in my latest PEDAL & PORT Journal article, including who each option may suit and why riding together matters more than what kind of bike you choose.

🚴 How fit do you really need to be for a cycling holiday in Europe?

It’s one of the biggest questions people have before considering a cycling trip.

Do you need to be a serious cyclist? Ride hundreds of kilometres every week? Be able to tackle huge climbs?

Not necessarily.

I put together a new PEDAL & PORT Journal article looking at what fitness you actually need, how daily distances and terrain matter, and why choosing the right type of trip can make all the difference.

If a cycling holiday in Europe has ever crossed your mind, this might help answer a few questions.

Ever wonder what the difference is between a River Cruise, Active River Cruise and Bike & Boat trip? 🚴‍♂️🚢

I’ve been digging into this because the terms can sound similar, but the actual travel experiences are very different.

Some trips are cruise first with cycling as an option. Others make active exploration a bigger part of the journey. And with Bike & Boat, cycling can become one of the main reasons you’re travelling.

I put together a new PEDAL & PORT Journal guide that explains the differences, including e-bikes, guided vs. self-guided riding, rest days and how these trips can work when one person cycles more than the other.

If you enjoy cycling and travel, I think you’ll find this useful.

Can a river cruise actually be active enough for someone who loves to move? 🚴‍♂️🥾🚢

That was one of the questions I had when I started looking more seriously at river cruising.

I love cycling, exploring on foot and actually experiencing the places I visit. I don’t want every vacation to be an athletic challenge, but I also don’t want to spend the entire trip sitting and watching the world go by.

What surprised me is how much river cruising has evolved.

Depending on the river, cruise line and itinerary, active experiences can include cycling, hiking, longer walking tours and other ways to get out and explore.

But here’s the important part:

“Active” doesn’t mean the same thing to everyone.

In my latest PEDAL & PORT Journal article, I look at what active river cruising really means and introduce a simple way of thinking about it:

Relaxed. Active. Active Plus.

The goal isn’t finding the hardest trip.

It’s finding the trip that fits you.
