I almost died in the Australian Outback. 😳

Okay
 maybe that's a little dramatic.

But when your tour guide is considering calling the Royal Flying Doctor Service and you eventually have to get carried down the mountain, you know things have gone a bit sideways. 😂

New story on Beyond the Destination: The Outback Doesn’t Care How Prepared You Are.

And yes — I'd still do the hike again.

That time I almost died while hiking Kings Canyon Rim Walk in the Outback...

It’s the last Sunday in August before our feeds start filling up soon with all the “Back to School” photos we see each year. I love the energy of this time of year! While I no longer have kids in the traditional grade school years, both of mine will be starting university this fall and it’s a different kind of “back to school” energy in our household.

But
.back to school also means more than just backpacks, new clothes and school supplies. It’s also the time when the family calendar starts filling up again so make sure you include the pockets of time that could be your next getaway.

Long weekends are usually circled in my calendar! But many are looking at the Christmas breaks, Spring Break/Easter holiday, and everything in between.

But here’s the thing
..you’re probably not the only one thinking about these dates.

Once the kids start school and parents starting looking at their family calendars, starting earlier will give you more options before everyone else.

So as you’re adding important school dates, sports practices and games, and all the activities you’ve registered for, make sure you leave some time for “where should we go next?”

Because sometimes the best vacations start with a date circled on the calendar.

What travel dates do you have already circled on your calendar and when do you want to start planning for it? Let me know and I would love to help get some confirmed details on your calendar!

I’ve launched something new that I’m really excited about — my Substack. It’s Beyond the Destination - a place for the travel writing I’ve always loved: meaningful stories, destination insights, cultural reflections, and the behind‑the‑scenes perspective I bring as a travel advisor and writer. I collect a lot of content but don’t always know what to do with it or where it fits. So for now, I’ll use this space to create something that fuels my curiosity and hopefully yours too!
My first two posts are up, including a new article on Las Vegas and how the city is evolving in 2026.
If you enjoy thoughtful travel content, I’d love to have you follow along. There will be a lot of exciting stories ahead.

We always love it when Las Vegas tourism partners come to town!

The skyline in Las Vegas is changing yet again and soon, the iconic guitar of Hard Rock will adorn The Strip, and will join the many familiar landmarks that define the landscape of Vegas. For a city that is constantly re-inventing itself, Las Vegas is anything but the same, regardless of when you last visited!

The experiential nature of Las Vegas lends itself to be the place to go for entertainment, sports or dining. Once known primarily for gambling, the draw of all-you-can-eat buffets and rings of the casino floor are no longer defining the stereo-typical Las Vegas weekend. It’s a “choose your own adventure” type of place now! Regardless of age, budget, travel style or interests, there is something to enjoy for all in Vegas, with always something new to check out!

If you’re itching to get away for something different and looking for a change of scenery, even just for a few nights, let me tell you how Vegas may fit the bill!. Spending time with our valued Vegas partners who are eager to share their new experiences with you means there is a lot to share and so much excitement to enjoy!

Who else is buzzed to go to Vegas?!

Asia is a hot destination! đŸ”„And I don’t mean by temperature!

Over the last few months, I’ve been working on select itineraries to Japan, Korea, China and Vietnam and it never ceases to amaze me how these destinations hold so much cultural value and experience. And when you have a limited time on vacation, it is impossible to do it all so it really is about seeing the highlights and experiences, and moving on.

But, what if
..time was not an issue? How much time do you think you want to spend on vacation somewhere abroad? What is the sweet spot of time that balances being away and immersing yourself in another country before returning home and getting back into your regular routine in life?

On average most of these trips span about 2 weeks but is it really enough? You want to see the highlights. But you also want to experience all the little things as well.

So I’m curious — what’s your sweet spot?

If time wasn’t a limitation, how long would you stay abroad? Long enough to see the highlights
or long enough to feel like you’ve lived a little piece of life somewhere else?

Tell me your ideal number — I’d love to hear how you define the perfect trip.

It’s a good thing I didn’t have much planned for this August long weekend, because like many of you, I’m watching closely to see what happens next with WestJet and the flight attendants’ strike. Travel disruptions aren’t new (be it weather, strikes, airline issues, etc
) but they always land hard when they affect real people and real plans.

As travel advisors, we’re problem solvers and we are committed to helping our clients when a disruption impacts their travel plans. Long before a trip is booked, we’ve already spent hours researching, planning, coordinating, and crafting an itinerary that fits a client’s needs. Much of that work is invisible, and often unpaid, but it’s the foundation that makes travel feel seamless.

We make it look easy. From the outside it may look like we simply “book” the trip, but it’s so much more than a “transaction”. When you book with a travel advisor, you’re not just making a transaction — you’re gaining an advocate.

When disruptions happen, we’ve got your back. You have someone who knows your plans, understands your options, and is working to find solutions with an entire network of travel partners to find solutions. That support is often the difference between navigating a stressful situation alone and having someone in your corner. It’s the difference between feeling stranded or feeling supported.

So all this to say we understand unpaid work and maybe it’s why this resonates with so many of us in the travel industry. We understand what it’s like to put in hours of work that goes unseen and we do stand with the flight attendants to ensure they are compensated fairly and appropriately. No one likes to work for free.

Here’s hoping a resolution comes quickly so travellers can get back to the excitement of where they’re going, rather than worrying about how they’ll get there.

To everyone impacted, we’re thinking of you.
To the travel advisors working through the chaos — I see you.
And to our clients who trust us with their adventures — thank you. That trust means everything.

(And let's be real, when I work from home, I'm usually in pajamas and my office doesn't look this polished! 😆)

A new destination option has been unlocked for Calgarians and travellers from Western Canada and this opens up a whole new world for us to experience!

Etihad Airways will begin direct flight service from Calgary to Abu Dhabi starting November 2026. This provides a direct link from Western Canada to the Middle East, opening up the possibilities to explore even more parts of the world that usually involves lengthy travel days to get there.

The UAE becomes even easier to get to with Abu Dhabi a new destination to consider because of its year round sunshine, cultural landmarks, desert experiences and luxury resorts. Beyond that, it’s also a super-connector hub that can take you into India, Sri Lanka, The Maldives, Southeast Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

AND

.

Disneyland Abu Dhabi!

Yes! Disney is opening its next theme park in Abu Dhabi and while it’s too soon to know anything at this time, it is expected to open sometime between 2030 and 2033.

With this new nonstop flight, Calgary travellers can look forward to easier global adventures, new cultural experiences, and even a future Disney destination just one flight away. The world is opening up in a whole new direction — and this is only the beginning.

What are your thoughts on this new flight option and does this expand your bucket list of places to visit?

On the last day of the Calgary Stampede this year, we tip our hats to another amazing week full of Western fun and festivities. This time of year is when Calgary shines best and putting our passion, our pride, our hospitality and our heritage on full display.

The community comes together to share the world class spirit we have to welcome people from all over the world. We gather with co-workers, travel industry colleagues, family members and friends to celebrate the unique spirt of the Calgary Stampede through food, music and Western traditions.

I love this time of year and what our city has to offer guests who come to visit. And as we close out another Stampede, Calgary stands as a reminder that every destination has a moment when its spirit shines brightest. And this is ours.

It’s been an amazing week. Until next year
..yahoo! đŸ€  Did you go this year? What was the best part?
