We don't do may posts. In fact, we likely do far fewer than we had initially planned. Please know we are working hard for everyone in the background. Right now we are in the middle of preparing for Niagara Falls Comic Con 2026. This is the biggest show we do every year and promises to be another fun and exciting time. Please stop by our booth and say hi.

It's been a while since we've posted out here. My apologies. However there is something I feel I must share. After the Canada Post service disruption finished in December we had several orders on Amazon. However, with the service disruption came a drop in the Canada Post service. Right now on Amazon some of our customers are realizing that their orders have not arrived. We understand that, and are more than willing to address the issue and resolve it to each of our customers satisfaction. Some customers have chosen to express their frustration by posting negative feedback on Amazon.ca instead of contacting us for help. What they may not realize is, by doing so they are placing our entire account at risk of being suspended by Amazon. All we ask of any customer, is contact us first. We want to help and provide you with the best service we possibly can. Thanks for reading. Jeff

Canada Post Update: We've had to make a few tough decisions to ensure we can maintain our quality service. 1) We have temporarily put our Amazon account in Vacation mode. 2) For those who purchase from our MYMOVIENOW.ca website we will be shipping our orders when the strike is over. Our apologies for this inconvenience.

It's been a long time since we last did a movie review. Reviews here, aren't your new releases, so you won't find a review of 'Barbie' or 'Oppenheimer' on this page. Those reviews are a dime a dozen everywhere else. Here we review obscure media from the past that people must need to see, and just don't know it yet. I believe the last review on this page was for the 1974 TV series 'Planet of the Apes'. Yes, there actually was a TV series, and if you want to read our review, you may have to scroll back to some of our older post.

Today we are reviewing the 1968 cult movie 'Head'

'Head' stars Mickey Dolenz, Davey Jones, Michael Nesmith, and Peter Tolk, four men better known as the Monkeys.

'Head' was filmed just as the famed TV show 'The Monkees' was wrapping up. Part of the motivation for this movie was an attempt to change their image. It's questionable whether that objective was ever met, regardless if you're hoping to find more of the show in this movie you will be sadly disappointed.

The best way to describe this movie is to say bizarre. That's not to say it's not worth watching, in fact I found it quite enjoyable. Let's say it's worth the experience, if an experience is what you want.

The movie starts and finishes with the same scene. As the movie transitions from one scene to the next each scene appears disconnected in almost every way from the scenes around it.

It was said that the only person who truly knows the meaning of this movie is the directors shrink. I will say this is probably true.

The four guys do show their comfort in front of the screen, and while there is no Oscar performances here, they are quite good at doing what they do.

In the end you will find this movie to be more of a 1960's psychedelic experience than it is a story. If you go in with that as your expectation you won't be disappointed. Just remember you won't really know what you watched.

This is our second post on the series related to the business "partners" we use to provide you the service we do. This post is Concerning Canada Post.

Similar to Amazon, we are dealing with a big behemoth of a business "partner". In this case they do know we exist because the Postmaster at the locations where we operate know us. Technically, however these people are Shoppers Drug Mart employees, so perhaps we're back to Canada Post Doesn't know us from a whole in the wall.

There are two aspects to our relationship with Canada Post, first is their pricing, and second it there reliability.

From a pricing perspective, this can get complicated. I'll try to make it as straightforward as I can. The majority of what we ship is either Lettermail, or Expedited. Lettermail is a flat rate of $3.60 (for now). If we have to jump to Expedited, pricing jumps to anywhere from $15 to $25. There is nothing in between, which makes it very difficult.

If you, as the customer, order one regular sized DVD and don't mind if it doesn't have tracking, then we can get it out as Lettermail. The minute we start adding additional DVD's, or if you need tracking, the price from Canada Post jumps. It's an awkward position that we're put in where Canada doesn't really offer an affordable tracked service.

I should note, Canada Post is much more affordable than the private couriers, FedEx, UPS, Purolator, DHL, or any of the others. And for the sake of full transparency, I will note that I worked for Purolator for 12 years and I know how the courier industry works inside and out.

Regarding reliability, most of the time Canada Post if very reliable. Even with most of our shipping untracked the number of customers who tell us their order did not arrive is extremely small. Typically three events will increase this likelihood: (1)The busy Christmas season, (2)during employee disputes, and (3)during natural disasters. If any of these are occurring in a given area our likelihood of a package not arrive increases moderately.

Overall Canada Post has been a very good business partner. The risk associated with them is twofold. If they change the parameter for Lettermail forcing us into expedited shipping. This would almost end our business. Also, if/when Canada Post has a strike or lockout our business operation is all but halted.

I've had a few people ask me about the challenges and rewards of doing what we do. To that end I thought I would write a series of updates on the challenges of working with some of our business "partners". Of course I use the word partners loosely, as these really aren't partnerships but business agreements.

So let's start with the big one....Amazon.ca.

Amazon is a massive organization so lets address the elephant in the room. We represent a tiny percentage of a rounding error on an Amazon financial statement. They keep sending out surveys that ask questions like "Amazon cares about my business?" The truth is Amazon doesn't know we even exist despite doing business with us.

The upside of doing business with Amazon is they allow us access to the entire Canadian Market in a way we couldn't access otherwise. So there is great value to that exposure.

The pricing to use Amazon is significant, but not unreasonable. The upside is that most of our Amazon fees are triggered when a sale occurs, so there isn't a lot of risk. The downside is that we have no voice in our pricing. Amazon will summarily make pricing changes at their will.

The biggest risk with Amazon revealed itself in the fall of 2021 when they made a policy change regarding shipping, and then suspended several third party vendors (including us) for being in violation of their new shipping policy. Amazon eventually stepped back from their extreme position and reinstated most of the suspended vendors (including us), but implemented several changes that are not good for our customers.

I suspect in the long run we will continue to use Amazon.ca as long as they will have us, and we will continue to work around the changing conditions laid out by them.

This past weekend we were set-up at the annual Beachstrip Garage Sale event. This event has about 3 to 4 kilometres of garage sales and vendors. It's a fun day. We attend this event with many of our Hollywood Blockbuster titles that just can't sell online.

The challenge to this event, or any outdoor event for that matter, is getting the right weather. It's obvious that a rainy day can't work for us, however a day that is too hot and sunny won't work for us either. Both weather extremes risk damaging the cases. So we are very careful, and are always monitoring the weather conditions. This year was just about perfect. Despite this being such a hot summer, Sunday's temperature was much more tolerable.

The end result was a great day of meeting so many amazing movie fans. Hopefully they got that title that will be perfect for their collection.

We've got some other upcoming news regarding future events, however we'll wait until we are confirmed before making any formal announcement.

07/03/2023

We haven't provided any updates in a while. However, perhaps it's time to provide a quick rundown on the latest events.

We had a wonderful Niagara Falls Comic-con. Not only was the event a bottom line success (which we always must consider), but we were staffing our booth in costume (I was Prof. Dumbledore, my wife was Prof. McGonagall from Harry Potter lore.) and we were able to provide several young kids a wonderful mystery as I helped them perform some magic!!

After that event we took some time off for about 10 days. First time we've been away since before COVID.

While away we received some unfortunate new from Shopify regarding our website MYMOVIENOW.CA. They told us we were in violation of some branding and trademark laws. Just to be clear, we were not, and we are not. It took several e-mails, a lot of frustration, and a few sleepless nights to ultimately figure out that all Shopify was trying to do was cover their butt. They had us sign a legal document called an "attestation" that declared everything we sold was second hand. For those who are eagle eyed, you might notice that we have added some text on out "Condition" page to clarify the usage of the word "New" as not indicating it was from the manufacturer, but that it was not changed from its original purchase condition. Dealing with big companies has its benefits, but can be very frustrating at the same time (yes, I'm talking about you too Amazon!!)

Next Sunday we are setting up a vendor booth at the Hamilton Beachstrip garage sale. This is the annual event where we bring our mainstream Hollywood Blockbuster titles, and make them available at very affordable prices. This is also an outdoor event, so it will be weather permitting.

We'll be taking some additional time off in August to travel to the Maritimes. This was a trip we had planned in 2020 but a little thing called COVID got in the way.

Finally, we are anticipating that we will be at the Hamilton Comic-con at the end of September. We'll likely reserve our spot in the next two weeks.

Sorry for the long post, but I thought it might be nice to bring everyone up to speed as to what's been going on.

As always, if you have any questions feel free to reach out to us. We love hearing from you.

Jeff

So much has been happening here I thought it might me worth a quick update.

Three updates:

1. We are preparing for our first big event in several months. Shock-Stock takes place in London from May 5 to May 7. We are busy preparing for that great event.

2. We just purchased 140 wrestling DVD's and Blu-ray's. This is our first ever venture into the wrestling genre.

3. I personally have just been hired to serve as a part-time bookkeeper for my local church community. This means I will be diverting roughly 8-10 hours a week to support that effort.

So what does all this mean, it means that you will likely only see one or two updates on the MYMOVIENOW.CA website over the next few weeks. We were told by several people who plan to attend Shock-stock that after the horror genre, they would love to see some wrestling. So we need to get all these items priced, and if we tried to get them on the website at the same time we wouldn't be done by May 5th. So the focus is to get everything ready for the show.

Thanks for all your amazing support. And remember, if you ever have a question, or are looking for anything...please just reach out and ask.

Obviously, different people have there preferences when in comes to genre. And of course some genre's lend themselves better to a physical media (DVD, Blu-ray or even VHS). I've never met a hardcore horror fan who didn't want a copy of their favourite horror movie on physical media.

One genre we have never delved into is wrestling. It originally seemed so far outside the realm of what we were dealing with, however, so many of the comic-cons we set-up a booth at have a wrestling component that we've decided to take a look at the possibility of adding some to the mix.

We have a lead on 100+ wrestling DVD's...stay tuned to find out if we decide to acquire them.

I call this a story of the best laid plans...so this morning my wife and I got in the two vehicles to head to the Ancaster Toy & Collectibles show, and wouldn't you know it my Jeep Wrangler wouldn't start. Here it is all loaded with DVD's and Blu-ray's and it's stuck in the underground parking lot unable to go. Well, man did we need to scramble. Fortunately the show wasn't too far from the house, so we moved as much stuff from the Jeep to the Fit and raced to the show. My wife headed home and got everything else while I started the set-up. In the end we got to the show and got everything set-up on time...but a little more drama than we would have liked. Hopefully the next show is a little less stressful.
