Sun., June 14, 26 - Day 12. Calgary. What a beautiful day! This morning we explored the city with our local guide, Jim Walker under sunny, blue skies with the most fantastic cloud formations. We made several photo stops including Stampede Park, Heritage Park, The Saddle Dome and the original site of Fort Calgary. This afternoon we enjoyed reserved Grand stand seating at Spruce Meadows for their International Equestrian jumping competitions. There were many events ongoing including Fire Fighter competitions, Name the Foals, shopping, police and paramedic booths. Many people were dressed in pink as there was a Barbie theme to the wkd. and $20,000 in collective prize money being awarded. The grounds are beautiful. This evening we dined in Sky360 the revolving restaurant in the Calgary Tower.

June 13, 26 - Day 11 - from Banff to Calgary by way of Kananaskis.
We enjoyed sunshine and beautiful photo ops today including a herd of elk in the town of Banff.
Here are a few of our fun photos including lunch and a wagon ride at Boundary Ranch.
Yes those are pet Bison on their ranch. All because the owner once rode a buffalo as a stunt double in a movie set as a young man.

June 12, 26 - Day 10 afternoon - This afternoon we travelled to the picturesque town of Banff. We noticed that there is now wildlife fencing all along the roads which extends from Canmore to the B.C. border. Wildlife collisions have been reduced by 80% since the completion of this project. There are many under passes and wildlife overpasses for the animals to still cross the highway. We went up the Banff Mountain Gondola and enjoyed the views from this vantage point at 7486 feet as well as the film in the theatre of this beautiful National Park. This evening after checking into the Mount Royal Hotel there was free time to explore Main Street.

Fri., June 12, 2026 - Day 10 - It’s snowing!! And we have pictures to prove it. Today we travelled north to the Athabasca Glacier which is one of the six principal 'toes' of the Columbia Icefield. We boarded a bus at the Discovery Centre that took us to the base, then transferred onto an Ice Explorer all- terrain vehicle worth 1.1 million dollars to travel out to the Glacier, where we stepped onto a 10,000 year old sheet of ice. A few snowballs were thrown and pictures taken. It was snowing so heavily that we could not appreciate the stunning view. This glacier currently loses depth at a rate of about 40 to 45 feet per year according to our driver/guide Logan. It has receded more than 1.5 km (0.93 mi) and lost over half of its volume in the past 125 years. Easily accessible, it is the most visited glacier in North America. The glacier is approximately 6 km (3.7 mi) long, covers an areaof 6 km2 (2.3 sq mi), and is measured to be between 90–300 metres (300–980 ft) thick.Truly this morning was an iconic Canadian Rockies Experience.

Thursday. June 11/26 - Day 9 - from Three Valley Gap, B.C. to Saskatchewan River Crossing, Alberta. Today has been an amazing drive through the Rockies. We went through Rogers Pass which is the 3rd highest point along the TransCanada Hwy at 1330 m or 4364 feet. Then it was onto Kicking Horse Pass which is the highest elevation on the TCH at 1627 m or 5338 feet. It is the point of the Continental Divide and home to Glacier National Park as well. We appreciate all the information Vinh, our driver shared with us about the road construction, spiral tunnels for the trains, blasting for avalanches and the best lunch places in town!
We visited Emerald Lake for photos and then onto Lake Louise. The heavens decided to open up just as we stood at the Calendar Shot point for our group photo and then 10 minutes later the sun came out. Tonight we are at The Crossing Resort at Saskatchewan River Crossing. Our buffet meal was delicious and we were treated to an incredible rainbow as we exited the restaurant. The weather is to be a high of 5C tomorrow with a strong chance of snow on the ground in the morning. It was snowing on the surrounding mountains this evening. One of the interesting things about my job is the people you meet. Tonight while taking pictures of what became a double rainbow, I visited with a young couple from Ukraine who now call Edmonton home. They are working on all the legal documents to become Canadian citizens and remarked at how friendly everyone has been since their arrival and how safe they feel here. How lucky we are to call Canada our Home & Native land. Now to try and pick only 10 photos to go with today’s travel diary. Pictures do not do the landscape justice! Susanne

Wed. June 10 - day 8 of 17 of our Western Canada Tour. Today is a rest day here at Three Valley Gap Chateau. It is a landmark family owned heritage resort on the Trans-Canada Highway just 12 miles outside of Revelstoke, B.C. It began as a service stop in 1956 and by 1960 had 7 motel rooms - it now features 200 guest rooms and has its own hydro electric station.
It’s cool, we are wearing our winter coats & layers - very opposite to the weather at home in Ontario. Our driver has had a day off to reset his work log. Our guests have napped, walked, did laundry, read, enjoyed the indoor pool and explored the Heritage Ghost Town. This evening we enjoyed a guided tour of the Ghost Town with George Bell, son of the original owners. George shared fascinating stories about many of the buildings including the Railway Round House and largest covered Turntable in North America. Our evening concluded with a wonderful BBQ dinner.
