After more than 10 years as a travel advisor, Iโ€™ve finally decided I have enough travel advice - and opinions - to start my own monthly newsletter.

And this one is a little different from the marketing emails my host agencyโ€™s head office sends on my behalf.

No endless lists of travel deals. No giant sale banners. No supplier promotions.

Just a short note from me with travel information I think is actually worth knowing - practical advice, things Iโ€™m seeing with clients, destinations on my radar and the occasional opinion.

Itโ€™ll land near the beginning of the month, and itโ€™ll be short enough to read with your coffee.

Basically, my travel brain in your inbox once a month.

Coffee = life. โ˜•๏ธ
And since itโ€™s National Coffee Day, I have the perfect excuse to talk about one of my favourite things. (And share a few of the ridiculous number of coffee photos on my phone, lol.)

I cannot function without coffee. (Do not talk to me in the morning before I'm caffeinated.) But I love the ritual almost as much as the coffee itself.

At home, itโ€™s that first cup while I scroll, read or work on something. When I travel, itโ€™s an excuse to sit for a while - look at the view, people watch, soak in where I am.

Iโ€™ve had coffee overlooking the Caribbean, in the Costa Rican rainforest, at sidewalk cafรฉs in Europe, somewhere over the Atlantic and at the lake. The ritual is always one of my favourite parts.

Oh ya, and I am technically a certified Costa Rican coffee master. I have paperwork. ๐Ÿ˜˜

Anyone else love coffee as much as I do?

Full disclosure: Jason is my brother. But also for the record, I did NOT ask him to make this. He surprised me with it yesterday after getting home from Argentina, while Iโ€™m currently up to my eyeballs planning our upcoming Italy trip.

Iโ€™m not entirely sure whether this is genuine appreciation or an elaborate attempt to make sure I donโ€™t put him in the last row beside the bathroom on our next flight. ๐Ÿ˜‚

09/23/2026

Thereโ€™s a real vacation-planning lesson behind this joke.

Thereโ€™s absolutely nothing wrong with having a firm vacation budget. But the lower the budget, the more flexible everything else needs to become. Your dates. Your destination. Your resort. Your room. Your amenities.

The lower the budget, the shorter the wish list. And if the goal is the absolute lowest possible price, there may not be much of a wish list at all.

Because lower prices come with compromises. Maybe itโ€™s older rooms, more basic food and drinks, fewer amenities, less consistent service, or a resort thatโ€™s simply showing its age. Those things can sound perfectly reasonable when youโ€™re sitting at home looking at a price on a screen.

Itโ€™s easy to think, โ€œThatโ€™s fine. I just want to lie on a beach and relax for a week.โ€ But the reality is, youโ€™ll be sleeping on that uncomfortable bed, drinking that bottom-shelf liquor and spending your afternoons on those plastic pool loungers. Something that sounds perfectly fine in theory can feel a whole lot less fine by day three of playing โ€œguess the mystery meatโ€ at the buffet.

And thatโ€™s the part thatโ€™s easy to forget. Cheap isnโ€™t free. Youโ€™re still spending real money and using your vacation time.

So if keeping the price as low as possible is the priority, flexibility is non-negotiable. Give yourself a range of travel dates. Be open to different destinations. And think carefully about which resort features really matter to you.

Because the question isnโ€™t just, โ€œHow cheap can I get this?โ€

Itโ€™s also, โ€œWhat am I willing to give up to get there?โ€

09/21/2026

The perfect resort doesnโ€™t exist.

Iโ€™m reminded of this every time I see someone crowdsource their vacation on Facebook.

Someone posts, โ€œWe want an all-inclusive vacation to Mexico or the Caribbean. What resort would you recommend?โ€
And then everybody piles in.
โ€œWe LOVED this place.โ€
โ€œMy neighbor just got back from this one and said it was amazing.โ€
โ€œMy cousin takes her family here every year.โ€

Which is all very nice, except none of these people are going on your vacation.

Maybe one person travelled with three kids and youโ€™re looking for a quiet week away with your husband. Maybe somebody spent $2,000 and somebody else spent $20,000. Maybe Aunt Sallyโ€™s neighbor's cousin thinks a resort with a giant water park is fantastic, while you care way more about the beach, the food, or having somewhere peaceful to disappear for a week.

That doesnโ€™t make any of those resorts bad. It just means โ€œwe loved itโ€ is not nearly enough information to decide where somebody else should spend their vacation.

This is why I ask so many questions. Whoโ€™s travelling? What kind of vacation do you want? What matters most? What would drive you crazy? Is the beach more important than the pool? Do you want quiet and relaxed or lots going on?

Even โ€œI want a great beachโ€ needs more questions. A lot of my prairie clients are all about the beach. I mean, come on, we donโ€™t exactly have an ocean sitting in the backyard. But what does a great beach mean to you? Calm water you can actually swim in? A long beach for walking? Beautiful sand and a gorgeous view? Good snorkelling? Those are not always the same beach.

And thatโ€™s just one piece of it. Some people want a buffet. Some want ร  la carte restaurants as often as possible. Some absolutely want premium liquor. For others, that would never make the list. Some want a cafรฉ for coffee and snacks. Some love room service. Others would never use it. Beach and pool wait service can be a must-have for one person and mean absolutely nothing to someone else.

There are hundreds of all-inclusive resorts out there, but Iโ€™m not starting from scratch every time someone comes to me. I have go-to resorts. I also have resorts I avoid recommending because I see the same issues come up over and over again. Sometimes what I donโ€™t send you is just as important as what I do.

When I narrow things down to two or three options, Iโ€™m not saying those are the only good resorts out there. Based on what youโ€™ve told me, theyโ€™re the ones I think will give you the most things on your wishlist within the budget you want to spend.

That really is the goal. Get you as many of the things that matter to you as I can, for the money you want to spend.

Thatโ€™s also why you wonโ€™t see me posting hundreds of random cheap deals on my page. Even a โ€œcheapโ€ vacation is still a lot of money, and Iโ€™m not going to promote a resort I wouldnโ€™t feel good about sending one of my clients to.

Iโ€™ve walked the grounds of more than 75 resorts myself. Iโ€™ve stayed at resorts I loved that I would never recommend to certain clients. And there are resorts I wouldnโ€™t personally choose for my own vacation that I know would be exactly right for somebody else.

Iโ€™m not choosing my vacation. Iโ€™m choosing yours.

There is no resort that is perfect for everybody. There is just the resort that is the best fit for you, for this trip, for the things you care about and for what you want to spend.

So when someone asks me, โ€œWhatโ€™s the best all-inclusive resort?โ€ my answer is always going to be the same.

Best for who?

If your Canadian passport is coming up for renewal, youโ€™ve got a few different ways to do it now.

๐Ÿญ: ๐—•๐˜† ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—น

The old-fashioned route. Fill out the form, get your photos done and mail everything in. Current service standard is 20 business days, plus mailing time.

Online renewal is now available for eligible adults. You complete the application online and upload a digital passport photo that meets Canadaโ€™s requirements. The guideline is also up to 20 business days, plus mailing time.

That was actually our first plan. The problem was finding someone who could provide the proper digital photo. After a couple of failed attempts in Regina, we ditched that idea.

This is where my husband and I took two different routes.

He went to the Service Canada passport office in Regina on September 1. He got his instant passport photos done in Regina, walked in first thing in the morning, had no lineup and was finished in about 20 minutes. The Regina office offers a 10-business-day processing standard, and his passport arrived September 7.

I took the rural Saskatchewan route. I had my photos done locally in Carlyle and used the Service Canada outreach that comes to town every second Wednesday. I was there about an hour, but I also saved myself roughly four hours of driving to Regina and back. They gave me information to track my application online.

One advantage to applying in person is having an experienced set of eyes look over everything before it goes into the system. They can catch missing information, mistakes or photo issues right there, rather than having your application rejected, mailed back and starting all over again.

Canada also now has a โ€œ30 business days or freeโ€ guarantee. If processing a complete application takes more than 30 business days, the passport fee is refunded. Mailing time doesnโ€™t count.

So how is mine doing?

I applied September 2. My application falls under the 20-business-day processing standard, plus mailing time, and I was told to expect my passport by around October 16. As of today, it has been received and is under review. Next comes printing and mailing, and the tracker says everything is still within the normal processing time.

And this is where my little passport saga gets interesting. I leave for Italy on October 18.

Yes, I am a travel agent. Yes, I know better. In my defense, I had just been travelling and still needed the passport I was renewing.

So now we wait. My husbandโ€™s Regina passport is safely back in his hands. Mine is somewhere in the system working its way toward the printer.

Stay tuned for the next instalment of

Greek food vs. Italian food.

I honestly did not realize this was even a debate until we went to Greece last year. Because Italy is basically the poster child for travelling to Europe for the food. Pasta. Pizza. Risotto. Gelato. All the things.

But everywhere I turned, people who had travelled to both countries were telling me that Greek food is better. And then we went to Greece & I understood what they were talking about.

The tomatoes that actually taste like tomatoes. The feta. The olive oil. Fresh seafood and calamari. Grilled meats with lemon and herbs. Tzatziki. And gyros in basically every form we could get our hands on - we lived on them. Everything tasted so fresh and sooo good.

Greece has been very much on my brain this week. I have clients just home from Greece, others getting ready to leave right away, and a couple Greece trips I am currently quoting.

And because I can't stop thinking about it, tonight's supper turned into our Saskatchewan-style version of Greek food: grilled beef, warm pita, tomatoes and a very generous amount of tzatziki. (Yes, Frajolaki. I grew up thinking this was just a normal Greek-food thing you could get anywhere. Turns out it is very much a Saskatchewan thing. IYKYK.) It isn't exactly something you're going to find on the menu in a little Greek taverna, but the flavours took me right back.

I miss Greece & there's a good chance I accidentally book another trip there soon. ๐Ÿ˜˜

The timing is kind of perfect, though, because next month we're heading to Italy. So I feel like I am about to conduct some very important travel research.

Greece had an excellent showing last year. Italy, you're up.

For those of you who have eaten your way through both, which one gets your vote for the better food trip: Greece or Italy? ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ท ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น

If youโ€™re thinking about a winter vacation, here are three things I want you to know right now:

โ€ข September is not early. This has been my busiest summer for booking winter vacations yet. A lot of my clients already have their all-inclusive beach getaways deposited.

Prices are going up as plane seats and hotel rooms fill. Iโ€™m already seeing the same trips cost a lot more than they did last month.

My best-bang-for-your-buck resorts are already selling out for some winter dates. I have my go-to resorts - the ones that price well for what you get, have good food, good beaches, lots to do and consistently make my clients happy. Iโ€™m already finding stretches of dates where some of those resorts are completely unavailable.

You can. But itโ€™s a gamble.

I always compare it to a garage sale. Go early and you get to choose. Go late and maybe things are marked down, but youโ€™re choosing from whatever everybody else left behind.

Vacation planning works a lot like that.

The resorts that consistently fill their rooms donโ€™t need to lower their prices. And when you see something heavily discounted later, sometimes itโ€™s worth asking why there are still so many rooms available when everything else has been filling up.

Waiting might work out. But when youโ€™re spending thousands of dollars on a vacation either way, I think the better question is: ๐—ต๐—ผ๐˜„ ๐—ฑ๐—ผ ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚ ๐˜€๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜ ๐—บ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜† ๐˜„๐—ฒ๐—น๐—น?

Iโ€™d rather help you find the best vacation while we still have the most choices.

Because with so many nonstop flights from the Prairies, itโ€™s easy to think of Cancรบn as one repeat destination when really, the Mexican Caribbean can give you a completely different vacation every single trip.

Iโ€™ve visited 75+ resorts along this coastline, and thatโ€™s one of the things I love most about this part of Mexico. Well, that and the beaches. I am a beach girl, after all.

This is the relaxed, resort-focused vacation. Think newer resorts, modern design - where you can settle in for the week & be perfectly happy staying put.

Great pools, beautiful rooms, good food. And the beaches. Wide stretches of sand & that ridiculous Caribbean blue water.

Did I mention I like beaches?

Completely different vibe. The resorts tend to be taller & more compact, with some absolutely spectacular Caribbean views.

Youโ€™ve got restaurants, shopping & nightlife close by. It's an urban-style vacation that feels like youโ€™re in the middle of things rather than tucked away in a large resort complex.

And the water. That almost-unreal turquoise blue is hard to beat.

Head south and the experience changes. Youโ€™ll find lush, tropical properties, sprawling resort complexes, huge pools, water parks, long walking paths and resorts that can feel like little worlds of their own.

Youโ€™re also in a fantastic position for cenotes, eco-parks, ruins, snorkeling & just about every kind of excursion imaginable.

And the beaches? Letโ€™s just say they are not all created equal - and you bet I know which ones are worth getting excited about.

And this is by no means every option along the coast - just a few examples - but even within the Riviera Maya, thereโ€™s plenty of variety.

๐—ฃ๐˜‚๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜๐—ผ ๐— ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ผ๐˜€ gives you a smaller-town feel & great reef access.

๐—ง๐˜‚๐—น๐˜‚๐—บ gives you a different mix again, with beach resorts, jungle surroundings & easier access to some of the areaโ€™s best-known archaeological & nature experiences.

Same airport. Same coastline. Very different vacations.

So yes, you may have been to Cancรบn before. That definitely doesnโ€™t mean youโ€™ve seen all the ways you can vacation here.

Regina may be our closest airport, but for a lot of us in this corner of the province, Winnipeg is still a very reasonable drive - and sometimes that extra time on the road opens up a whole different set of nonstop winter vacation options.

And for my Manitoba friends, Winnipeg is already the obvious jumping-off point - and youโ€™ve got a pretty impressive winter-sun lineup sitting there this year.

Thatโ€™s especially worth knowing this winter, because Winnipeg has some really good direct lift to Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America.

For winter 2026/27, you can fly nonstop from Winnipeg to:

๐—ช๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ด - ๐—ฌ๐—ช๐—š

โ€ข Cancun
Puerto Vallarta
โ€ข Mazatlรกn
Los Cabos
Huatulco
Punta Cana
Puerto Plata
Belize City
Liberia, Costa Rica
Montego Bay, Jamaica

And this is exactly why I donโ€™t automatically look at only one departure airport when Iโ€™m helping someone plan a winter vacation.

Sometimes Regina is absolutely the best choice. And sometimes it makes sense to drive a little farther to Winnipeg if it means getting the destination you want on one flight - especially in winter, when taking a connection out of the equation also means one less chance of getting stranded somewhere because of a blizzard.

If youโ€™ve been saying, โ€œWe should book something this winter,โ€ consider this another little nudge.
