Caterpillar 950M Wheel Loader Diagnostic Case Study

Machine Information
Make: Caterpillar
Model: 950M Wheel Loader
Year: 2021
Engine: Cat C7.1 ACERT Tier 4 Final Diesel Engine (7.01L)

Customer Complaint - Operator reported:
Engine warning lamp illuminated intermittently
Reduced engine power under load
Excessive regeneration frequency
Increased fuel consumption
Machine entering derate mode during loading operations

The customer indicated that the machine had already undergone a parked regeneration and DEF quality inspection with no improvement.

Active Diagnostic Trouble Codes
CID 4364 FMI 18 - SCR NOx Conversion Efficiency Low
CID 3719 FMI 16 - DPF Soot Load High
CID 5394 FMI 17 - Aftertreatment Diesel Exhaust Fluid Dosing System Performance
CID 3251 FMI 0 - Diesel Exhaust Fluid Quality Abnormal

Diagnostic Procedure

Using the TEXA IDC6 OHW software and TXT Multihub 2 interface, a complete system scan was performed.

Step 1 – Verify Active Faults
Confirmed all aftertreatment-related DTCs were active.
No engine performance faults were present.

Step 2 – Review Live Data - Monitored:
Upstream NOx Sensor, Downstream NOx Sensor, DEF Dosing Quantity, DEF Pressure, SCR Temperature, DPF Differential Pressure, Calculated Soot Load

Abnormal readings showed:
Low NOx conversion efficiency
Excessive DEF consumption
Elevated soot load accumulation

Step 3 – DEF System Inspection - Performed:
DEF Pressure Test
DEF Injector Functional Test
DEF Pump Activation Test

Results:
DEF pressure was unstable during dosing events.

Step 4 – Root Cause Analysis - Removed and inspected the DEF dosing valve.

Findings:
Heavy crystallization present
Partial injector restriction
Inconsistent DEF atomization into SCR catalyst

This condition reduced SCR efficiency and caused repeated aftertreatment faults.

Repair Performed
Replaced DEF dosing injector - Cleaned DEF supply lines - Completed parked regeneration - Cleared adaptive values & Verified DEF pressure and dosing operation.

Verification - Machine operated under full load for 3 hours.

Results:
No active DTCs returned
SCR efficiency restored
Regeneration intervals normalized
Engine derate eliminated
Fuel consumption returned to normal

Final Diagnosis
A restricted DEF dosing injector caused poor DEF atomization, resulting in reduced SCR conversion efficiency, elevated soot loading, repeated regenerations, and engine derate conditions.

Diagnostic Equipment Used
TEXA IDC6 OHW Software - TXT Multihub 2 Interface

Technician Procedures:
β€’ Performed full system scan
β€’ Monitored BCM live data during activation tests
β€’ Performed loaded voltage drop testing on BCM power and grounds
β€’ Used TEXA interactive wiring diagrams to isolate shared chassis ground circuit
β€’ Verified excessive resistance at left-hand cab chassis ground connection

Root Cause:
Corroded chassis ground eyelet causing intermittent voltage instability and communication loss across body control circuits.

Repair:
β€’ Cleaned and repaired chassis ground connection
β€’ Replaced damaged eyelet terminal
β€’ Performed loaded voltage drop verification
β€’ Cleared all communication faults
β€’ Confirmed stable BCM operation and proper multiplex communication

Result:
Vehicle returned to service with all body electrical systems operating normally and no returning communication faults.

Modern multiplexed heavy truck systems require OE-level diagnostics, live data analysis, and proper voltage drop testing to accurately isolate intermittent electrical failures.
