Penang Hill overlooks George Town, Malaysia, with views across the city and out toward the Strait of Malacca.

You can reach the top by funicular railway in just a few minutes, or take one of the hiking trails through the surrounding forest.

Nearby, Kek Lok Si Temple is one of Malaysia’s largest Buddhist temple complexes, known for its pagoda, colourful architecture and hillside setting.

“If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning.” — Catherine Aird

I've always loved this quote. But lately, I've been thinking about what makes someone a good example in the first place.

Well past 75, my mom was riding banana boats, petting crocodiles, and taking airboat rides through the Florida Everglades. She stayed up until all hours in the casino and wasn't above having a b**r with her breakfast buffet.

Some people might have looked at her and thought, “What on earth is she doing at her age?”

I looked at her and thought, “That's exactly how I want to live.”

She wasn't worried about acting her age. She was too busy enjoying it.

And maybe that's the funny thing about being a horrible warning. Sometimes, you're actually setting a pretty wonderful example.

Here's to the people who remind us that life is meant to be lived. ❤️

The Seine runs through Rouen in Normandy, with six road bridges linking the two banks.

The city has a long history as a river port and centre of trade. Its bridges reflect different periods of development, including the modern Pont Gustave-Flaubert, a vertical-lift bridge designed to let tall ships pass through.

Alongside its medieval streets and half-timbered buildings, Rouen still has a strong connection to the river that helped shape it.

Hampi’s Elephant Stables give a sense of the scale of the Vijayanagara Empire. Built to house royal elephants, the structure has eleven large domed chambers, with arches and varied roof shapes reflecting Indo-Islamic architectural influences.

Located in Karnataka, India, Hampi preserves the remains of an imperial capital. Its UNESCO-listed monuments include temples, royal buildings, and former market streets, spread across a landscape of granite boulders beside the Tungabhadra River.

The stables offer a glimpse beyond the temples into the practical workings of the royal court—and the care devoted to buildings with an everyday purpose.
