Owner-Operator Business Essentials: Turning a Truck
Into a Sustainable Business
Buying a truck doesn’t automatically make someone a business owner — it makes them someone with a truck and a lot of
decisions still ahead of them. The owner-operators who last in this industry are the ones who treat the truck as one part of
a business, not the whole business itself. Here’s a practical look at what actually separates a sustainable owner-operator
operation from one that burns out within the first couple of years.
Understanding Your True Operating Costs
The biggest mistake new owner-operators make is pricing their services around revenue per mile without fully accounting
for cost per mile. Real operating costs include:
Fuel — the single largest variable expense, fluctuating with market prices and driving habits
Truck payment or lease — a fixed cost regardless of how many miles are run
Insurance — often higher than new owner-operators expect, particularly in the first few years of operating
authority
Maintenance and repairs — both routine (oil changes, tires) and the inevitable unplanned repair
Permits and licensing — including IFTA, IRP registration, and any commodity-specific permits
Dispatch or brokerage fees, if applicable — typically a percentage of each load’s revenue
Until all of these are accounted for, a rate that looks profitable on paper can actually be running at a loss. Calculating a
true cost-per-mile figure — and revisiting it regularly as fuel prices and expenses shift — is the foundation of sustainable
pricing decisions.
Choosing Between Lease-On and Independent Authority
New owner-operators generally face a choice between leasing onto an established carrier or obtaining independent
operating authority.
Leasing on typically means: - Access to the carrier’s freight network without having to find loads independently -
Simplified compliance, since the carrier often handles much of the regulatory burden - Less control over rates and load
selection - Often a faster path to earning, since the search for freight is handled by someone else
Independent authority typically means: - Full control over whi
