Happy Garifuna Settlement day to all my Belizean friends. 🇧🇿 ❤️
One of the largest cultural celebrations in Belize is Garifuna Settlement Day.
This is held annually and takes place on the 19th of November.
The day commemorates the arrival of the largest Garinagu group to Belizean shores in 1823. It starts with the re-enactment of the historic journey of the “Yuruemein”.
It is a public re-enactment of the epic journey of the Garifuna people from their homeland in St. Vincent to Roatan Honduras, then to the shores of Belize.
Yuruemein is a Garifuna word which means “homeland”and it is re-enacted in every major community where the Garinagu reside and presents itself as one of Belize’s prominent cultural celebrations.
Garifuna Settlement Day is celebrated for the entire week including parades, live music, drumming, dancing and prayers. The first landing of the Garifuna is reenacted with boats coming ashore carrying cassava sticks, plantain suckers and sugarcane representing the food the Garifuna people bought with them.
This is the celebration as we saw it. It’s one of my favorite days I’ve experienced on this planet. Thank you for watching.
Garifuna Settlement Day is a public holiday in Belize, celebrated each year on November 19. The holiday was created by Belizean civil rights activist, Thomas Vincent Ramos, in 1941.
It was recognized as a public holiday in the southern districts of Belize in 1943, and declared a national holiday in 1977. The holiday celebrates the settlement of the Garifuna people in Belize after being exiled from the Grenadines by the British army. The major festivities for the holiday occur in the town of Dangriga, including parades, street music, and traditional dancing.
I was lucky enough to find myself there during this celebration in 2017. It was one of the most beautiful celebrations I've seen.
We stayed at Copal Tree Lodge, a Muy’Ono Resort and we can't wait to go back.
