Maracanã, officially Estádio Jornalista Mário Filho, is a football stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The stadium is part of a complex that includes an arena known by the name of Maracanãzinho, which means "the Little Maracanã" in Portuguese.

Owned by the Rio de Janeiro state government, it is, as is the Maracanã neighborhood where it is located, named after the Rio Maracanã, a now canalized river in Rio de Janeiro. It was opened in 1950 to host the FIFA World Cup, in which Brazil was beaten 2–1 by Uruguay in the deciding game. Since then, it has mainly been used for football matches between the major football clubs in Rio de Janeiro, including Flamengo, Fluminense, Botafogo and Vasco da Gama. It has also hosted a number of concerts and other sporting events.

FEIRA SÃO Cristovão - History
1945 dates the beginning of the first movement that gave rise to the Feira de São Cristóvão, or Fair of the Northeast Brazil , as it is known in the State. At this time, northeasterners retreatants arrived at Rio De Janeiro in trucks, from the Northeast to work in civil construction. The lively party with a lot of music and typical food, generated by the meeting of new newcomers with relatives and countrymen, gave rise to the fair, which remained around the field for 58 years.

In 2003 the old Pavilion was renovated by the city of Rio and transformed in the Center Municipal Luiz Gonzaga of Northeastern Traditions. Today, not only the Northeast attend the Fair to rescue a littje of their culture, as well as cariocas and tourists from all over the country.

What are blocos?
Blocos, sometimes called bandas, are the free street parties that take place around Carnival throughout the city. They are centered on a band, which either parades a pre-determined route through the streets on a sound truck, or remains at a fixed location.
They vary in all aspects, from drawing a few hundred spectators to a million, from 7am starts to sunset parties weaving along Ipanema beach. Some are associated with a neighbourhood restaurant or bar, others with a celebrity or a district. Many have a revered history based on traditional samba, while the more recent blocos have been inspired by more contemporary music like the Beatles-themed Bloco do Sargento Pimenta or the New Kids on the Bloco.

How do I choose which ones to go to?

Blocos are organized by neighbourhood so it is easy to stumble across parties close towherever you stay in Rio. The sound is unmistakable as the samba rhythms blast out throughout the streets, and you can simply just tag along, following the music.

What should I wear?

Closed shoes are recommended, as the streets get dirty quickly with so many people drinking and dancing, and comfortable clothes as summer temperatures can reach 30-35C. But during carnival, anything goes so dress up as much – or as little - as you want. Costumes and accessories are on sale almost everywhere during carnival, and most blocos sell T-shirts. (Y) :)

What should I be aware of?

Pickpocketing is common during carnival :( , so keep money, cameras and phones close and hidden. Keep hydrated, wear sunscreen, and make use of bathrooms where you can – there’s a fine of R$510 (£87) for relieving yourself in the street. Some blocos have water cannons so take care to keep valuables dry
