Old-Town courtyards switch on their lanterns and the new vintage takes centre stage. The Plovdiv Young Wine Festival (21–23 November 2025) turns historic museum houses and Revival-era courtyards into pop-up tasting rooms across the Old Town (local name: “Defile na Mladoto Vino”).

🇧🇬🧊🌲 Vitosha warm-up: from Sofia café to the “Golden Bridges” 🌲🧊

Order an espresso in the city, and within about an hour you can be breathing pine air beside a granite “stone river”—Zlatnite Mostove (“Golden Bridges”) on Vitosha. Frost trims the spruce, the boulders hold a dusting of white, and the light bounces off lichen like tiny lanterns. It’s the perfect first-snow photo stop without a full mountain mission.

Why it works now
• Vitosha Nature Park sits directly above Sofia—the oldest nature park in the Balkans (1934) with well-marked trails and easy access.
• Zlatnite Mostove is an all-season spot: a natural blockfield of rounded granite boulders shaped by ancient freeze-thaw cycles. When temperatures dip, it’s winter’s “hello” in the treeline.
• Simple plan: warm layers, sturdy shoes, and check conditions; the path network is signed, with clear turnaround options if weather shifts.

🇧🇬🎿📜 Chepelare: Bulgaria’s ski story—then eyes up to Mechi Chal 📜🎿

Step off the street and into a room of medals, wooden skis and race bibs: Chepelare’s Ski & Winter Sports Museum tells how a small Rhodope town raised champions—most famously Ekaterina Dafovska, who won biathlon gold at Nagano ’98. Photos, kit and local lore make it personal; you’re not just reading history, you’re standing where it was made.

Walk back outside and look up: beyond the rooftops lies Mechi Chal, the ski area above town. When cold spells roll in, its long, straight fall-line pistes switch from green to white and the lifts hum to life. Down in Chepelare (around ~1,100–1,230 m), cafés warm hands; up on Mechi Chal, you point your tips and let the mountain do the talking. It’s the kind of place where the past isn’t behind glass; it’s busy.

Early autumn brings comfortable temperatures and clear, honeyed light, perfect for strolling the cobbled lane, watching the waterwheel at work and filling a small paper bag with warm bread from the old oven. The museum is open year-round, so you’re never guessing about access—just check the day’s demonstrations at the gate and wander in.

🇧🇬🍷 Melnik: sandstone towers, cool cellars—one perfect autumn afternoon 🍷🇧🇬
The path lifts you into warm light and sandstone “pyramids” shaped like cathedrals and crowns. Drop back into town and step inside the Kordopulova House (built 1754)—a National-Revival mansion with rock-cut wine cellars that keep a steady, cool hush. Around here the vines grow a native grape, Broad-leaf Melnik, and early autumn is when the valley smells faintly of harvest. Quiet streets, soft hills, and a glass with a story—Melnik does mellow brilliantly.

• The Melnik Earth Pyramids rise up to ~100 m; they’re free to visit year-round.
• Kordopulova House is a museum all year (paid entry), known for its historic cellar architecture.
• Melnik sits ~175 km south of Sofia in the Struma Valley.
