Fayoum lakes (Qarun and Wadi El-Rayan) are a major stopover for more than 214 species of migratory and resident birds, receiving thousands of rare birds, most notably flamingos, spoonbills, and grey herons, especially during the winter season (from October to March) as they flee the cold of Europe, making them a prominent destination for birdwatching tourism.
