Direct recycling of batteries could be the most circular route 🔋♻️

A review from 2025 identifies direct recycling as potentially the most circular route, because it requires less energy and fewer chemicals than cathode material reuse or recycling.

The conditions include better sorting, battery diagnostics, and quality control.

Direct recycling is not ‘waste processing’, but rather the recovery of battery materials – and this is increasingly attracting interest within a circular economy.

The battery is no longer broken down into its pure raw materials. This works best when battery cells can be properly treated before recycling.

The process depends on the type of battery, but generally parts can be ground into a fine powder to extract raw materials such as lithium, nickel, and manganese.
