Friday FUs!

This is a common flashing yellow light that people don't realise is an amber alert on the jib or genoa.

Those little black lines a couple inches back from the luff are you furlers way of requesting some love. It's the dust thats produced by movement in the furler joiners because the screws are loose (on the sail... we can't help with the other ones).

Time to drop the sail and hoist someone up the forestay with a 5mm hex key in hand to tighten all the grub screws.

If you're scared of heights just remember that our bill is less scary than the price of a new furler!

THIS... This is why I need a 3D scanner. How is it some of the biggest companies aren't publishing a drill template?

Modelling up the base of some new throttle controls which we're fitting up this week with some custom plinths and holders to hide those gaps.

More to come...

New halyard for one of our racers.... 8mm UHMPE with a becket splice, taper and raw splice on the end. Had to give it some colour dip to soothe the OCD.

Give us a shout for all your running rigging needs.

FFU!!! Let’s talk pre-purchase inspections and surveyors.

If we look at cars, it’s a requirement of selling to have an inspection done. On average boats are way more expensive yet a lot of the time people skip the cost with a “She’ll be right” or “I know boats”. A surveyor is going to go around and unemotionally tear the thing apart, it’s not cheap but here’s how I see it…
- WORST - it passes and you know what’s wrong (a perfect boat doesn’t exist).
- TYPICAL case - you recover your survey costs knocking down the price with highlighted issues
- BEST case - unacceptable issues and you walk away

A recent replacement of a skin fitting led me to a hollow sounding hull, led me to a hollow stringer, led me a dodgy glass repair which tore off by hand to reveal this little gem. Someone had noticed this issue before and choose concrete as their medium of choice for repairing the stringer. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Let's kick off - Fridays Mistake Ups.

To be clear - FFU is intended to be informative - I'm not vilifying anyone, just hoping people can learn from everyone's mistakes rather than just their own.

You often hear complaints about the cost of a crane to lift the mast for a boats decennial rigging replacement and how "Old Mate did it in the boat". I give you reason #16 the rigger wants to lift the mast - the rigging was replaced 18 months ago and the mast step collapsed last week.

It doesn't photograph well but there's a 6-8mm drop from the aft paint crack to the mast base. To be confirmed, but it looks like a plywood mast step, improperly sealed mast bolts, bit of water... wood rot... bang - sort of thing that would be picked up when the mast bolts were removed.

The other common one is skipping electrical replacement - VHF and lights. Most recreational rigs do not have a wiring channel which means it's impossible to properly replace with the mast up - pulling the rig means this can all be checked and replaced as needed.

There's instances in-situ will work but if your rigger calls for a rig lift think of it as insurance (and cheaper than a decade of power boat engine services).

I give you... FRANKENBLOCK!

A discontinued Ronstan mainsheet car experienced an unscheduled traveller ease. We mixed the Ronstan car with Harken sheaves, added some 3D printed spacers and custom laser cut cheeks.... IT'S ALIVE!

We love recreating unobtanium - 35 year old outhaul car for an in mast furler, replacement was going mean changing track. What we were given, the design and prototyping process, and the final product ready for return to service.
