EU market surveillance: how can we close the gap between rules & reality ❓

While the 🇪🇺 has a strong legal framework for market surveillance, enforcement is struggling to keep pace with today’s market realities.

Digitalisation, global supply chains and the rise of e-commerce make it harder to detect and stop non-compliant products, especially from non-EU sellers operating online.

At the same time, limited resources and uneven enforcement across Member States create an unlevel playing field for businesses that comply with EU rules. We call for:

✅ stronger and more consistent enforcement
✅ better coordination between authorities, including customs
✅ simpler, more coherent rules
✅ increased investment in enforcement capacity.

Without such reforms, the EU risks falling behind a rapidly changing market landscape.

The European Commission’s marks an important step towards strengthening Europe’s capacity in strategic digital technologies, from semiconductors and AI to cloud and open source.

Reducing critical dependencies and boosting Europe’s innovation base is essential for competitiveness, resilience and long-term growth. But ambition alone is not enough.

To succeed, Europe must ensure:

📍 A business-friendly regulatory environment that enables companies to innovate and scale.
📍 Faster permitting and simpler rules, especially for strategic investments and infrastructure.
📍 Strong mobilisation of private investment alongside public support.

European companies will play a central role in turning this agenda into real economic impact by investing, innovating and creating quality jobs.

The priority now is clear: deliver in practice what is announced in policy.

🌿 is a strategic choice for competitiveness, resilience and job creation.

It helps decarbonise industry, reduces reliance on imported fossil resources, and supports long term competitiveness. But for businesses, predictability matters. That means traceable supply chains, smart investment incentives and policies that reward circular design and long-term value creation 🎯

🌿 EU rules are strong but they’ve become too complicated. Too many forms, overlaps and time lost. This is why we welcome the EU’s Food & Feed Safety Omnibus Package that aims to cut unnecessary red tape while maintaining 🇪🇺’s high safety standards.

The package also supports modern tools, like drones, which can reduce pesticide use.

📍The EU-Mexico agreement marks an important step in strengthening Europe’s global economic partnerships and in accelerating trade diversification.

At a time of rising geopolitical uncertainty and increasing protectionism, deepening cooperation with like minded partners such as Mexico is essential. The modernised agreement will expand market access, remove remaining tariffs and tackle non tariff barriers, creating new opportunities for businesses and investment on both sides.

For Europe, this is also about resilience. Diversifying supply chains and securing access to critical raw materials are key to supporting the green and digital transitions and reducing strategic dependencies.

Importantly, the agreement goes beyond trade. It reinforces commitments to sustainability, labour rights and a rules based global trading system, all essential to ensure that openness and competitiveness go hand in hand.

For European businesses, including , this agreement can open a dynamic market offering new prospects for growth, innovation and job creation.

Now the focus must be on effective implementation, so that companies can fully benefit from the opportunities this partnership brings 🌍

Very engaging visit today for our delegation in Cyprus where they visited The Cyprus Institute and could learn more about:

📍 CARE-C, a regional European Center of Excellence for Climate and Atmosphere Research
📍 the Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Center (STARC), a leading research institution in the Eastern Mediterranean, focusing on the intersection of cultural heritage, science, and technology.
📍 the , Environment & Water Research Center (EEWRC)

These realities show why research centres such as CARE-C, STARC and EEWRC are essential to develop practical solutions for climate resilience, sustainable water management and clean energy ⚡
