🔋 Electric aircraft will be essential in the aviation industry’s shift to fossil-free air travel.

🔌 To create a more practical, cheaper and greener alternative, one of the main challenges is implementing charging stations. Fast charging technology is inevitable to get aircraft back in the air quickly after each flight.

☀️ Producing electricity with solar energy could also be a good solution for airfields.

🔋 The business case for electric aircrafts seems to be taking off, but it will take time until they reach an increased autonomy. Hybrid-electric propulsion system may increase the flight range.

🛩 This technology combines two sources of power, an electric one that can be used for take-off and landing, when the aircraft is close to the ground, and conventional fuel used during the cruise phase as a range extender.

🌍 It could be operated with SAF instead of conventional aviation fuel, making it even more sustainable.

Do you know what is the longest time a plane has ever been in the sky? 🏅

➡️ The answer is not some air-refueled military aircraft or a well-engineered glider, but a humble Cessna 172, named Hacienda. This aircraft stayed airborne for 64 days, 22 hrs 19 mins and traveled over 240 000 km.

🏆 It was made possible by refueling from a Ford truck on the ground. Just imagine all the food, sleep, noise, fuel, and logistics problems, and you’ll understand why this is a truly remarkable achievement.

🏔 Have you been thinking about obtaining the Mountain Qualification?

❄️ Flying over the summits, landing your aircraft on a snowy glacier, flying in narrow valleys: the mountain is a place full of beautiful experiences once you have your qualification.

💡 Mountain flights will continually improve your flying skills and your knowledge. It's probably the most awarding training for a pilot.

What’s an eVTOL ? 💡

➡️ eVTOL stands for electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing and is about to become a new way of air mobility.

eVTOL are light commercial aircraft with unique flying characteristics, that can take off and land vertically like helicopters without the need for a runway, and fly forward like airplanes. These vehicles will be used for short-distance flights of 50-200 miles (80-320km).

🔋 The “e” means they are powered by electricity instead of traditional internal combustion engines.

Safety is one of the main concern in aviation, and today’s technologies are designed to improve it. Today, we’re introducing FalconEye System ⏬

FalconEye is the first Head-Up Display (HUD) that displays both synthetic vision and infrared imagery simultaneously in what is called a combined vision system (CVS).

🔎 This system lets pilots approach every mission with a greater level of confidence as it provides an unprecedented level of situational awareness. They know exactly where they are in all bad weather operations, day or night.

🔋 Electric cars are here to stay. What about electric aircraft ? The Velis Electro from Pipistrel was the first electric aircraft to be certified by EASA in 2020.

➡️ For now, the autonomy of this first full-electric aircraft is 1h07min. But battery technology has improved so much that we might see new larger electric aircraft taking-off soon, staying airborne longer than that.

💡 Electric propulsion offers several benefits: lower greenhouse emissions, quieter flights, safer flights, and reduced operating costs. It also could open up new segments of aviation, including urban air taxis and new sub-regional markets.

Did you know that the current world record for the highest a glider has flown is 76 124 ft (23 km) ? 🏅

On September 2nd 2018, the Perlan 2 soared into the record books by reaching 76 124 ft. This flight took place in El Calafate, Patagonia in Argentina. It was achieved in a special glider called Perlan 2. The project goal is to get to 100 000 ft+.

💡 Gliders regularly fly up to 20 000 ft. A normal glider, if equipped with oxygen, can get this high with the right conditions.

You have your PPL and have been thinking about obtaining your Instrument Rating to fly in bad weather conditions ? ☁️

🛫 Instrument Rating gives you the opportunity to fly an airplane from point A to point B while relying solely on the instruments, without having to look out the window except for take-off and landing.

💡 It is arguably one of the most valuable ratings you can add to your pilot certificate and is a fun and challenging discipline of flight training.

👩🏻‍✈️👨🏻‍✈️ Instrument Rating is also required for those aspiring to become professional pilots.

🟢 To conclude this series of posts about Business Aviation Commitment on Climate Change (BACCC), let’s focus on improvements through Market Based Measures.

🏛 For the last few years, there has been much work at both technical and political levels at ICAO to develop a global carbon-offsetting scheme for international aviation. Global Market Based Measures will act as a gap-filler in order to achieve the long-term goal: reducing CO2 emissions and fly net-zero by 2050.

➡️ Since there will not be an immediate impact delivered by improvements in technology, infrastructure and operations, and alternative fuels, Market Based Measures, such as voluntary offsets, can provide options for supporting action to mitigate the industry’s emissions in the nearer term.
