Nordic Logistics Association

Nordic Logistics Association This we do on behalf of around 17.000 operators and companies in the Nordic countries who are members of the founding associations of NLA.

NLA represents Danish Transport and Logistics (DTL), the Norwegian Road Transport Association (NLF) and the Swedish Association of Road Transport Companies (SÅ) in Brussels with support from its associated member Finnish Transport and Logistics SKAL. NLA was established to ensure that the common interests and positions of its Nordic haulier associations are promoted in close dialogue with the EU i

nstitutions and transport stakeholders in Brussels. Our aim is to constructively forward the views of the members of the founding associations in the relevant EU decision making processes, and thereby contribute to the work of improving the framework conditions for transport operators in the Nordic countries and beyond.

The European Parliament is now finalising the text on the Weights and Dimensions directive.🇪🇺

As this legislation moves forward, we want to highlight a key point: allowing heavier, longer, and higher-capacity vehicles can make freight transport significantly more efficient.

More capacity means more pallets transported in a single trip, resulting in fewer journeys, better efficiency, and lower emissions.🚛🌍

Good discussions yesterday morning at our breakfast event in the European Parliament, organised together with the Common Road Transport Office (NLA, BGL, FNTR, TLN) and the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA), as negotiations on the Weights and Dimensions Directive move forward. ☕🇪🇺

For NLA, the message is straightforward: longer and heavier vehicle combinations are one of the most effective tools we have to increase productivity, move more goods with fewer drivers, and reduce emissions per pallet transported. All while supporting a parallel transition to battery electric trucks. 🚚🚛

Importantly, this is not about choosing one transport mode over another. Road, rail and maritime complement each other and all play an essential role in Europe’s logistics system.

A more efficient road sector will only help to strengthen intermodal solutions in Europe, benefitting the entire logistical system.

A big thank you to MEPs, truck manufacturers, EU Member States and colleagues who contributed to an open, candid and constructive discussion. Not least many thanks to Dirk Saile from BGL for facilitating and organising the meeting with ACEA.

NLA comments on the Council’s agreement on the Weights and Dimensions Directive: High-capacity transports are needed to stay competitive, efficient and sustainable

EU Member States have today reached a common position on the revised Weights & Dimensions Directive, an important step for more efficient and sustainable road transport.

”Europe needs an ambitious framework that allows heavier, longer and higher vehicle combinations nationally and across borders,” says Oscar Hyléen, CEO of the Swedish Association of Road Transport Companies and Chairman of NLA. “This is the most efficient way to cut fuel use, emissions and the number of trucks on the road.”

The agreement maintains national flexibility — crucial for us in the Nordic region, where high-capacity transport already operates safely across borders.

Torsten Laksafoss Holbek, CEO of NLA, adds: “We welcome that Member States support continued cross-border operations between consenting countries. This keeps road transport competitive and energy-efficient.”

As trilogue negotiations begin, NLA highlights the importance of incentives for zero-emission vehicles operating across border in Europe. “Compensation for lost payload is key for companies investing in electric trucks,” Hyléen concludes.

On 4 December EU Member States reached a common agreement on the revision of the Weights and Dimensions Directive. This follows from lengthy negotiations since the proposal was presented in July 2023. “Europe needs an ambitious framework that allows for heavier, longer and higher combinations to d...

NLA welcomes the European Parliament’s vote in favour of the Omnibus 1 Package — an important first step toward reducing unnecessary administrative burdens for road transport companies. Now the EU needs to deliver and reduce burdens on companies.

“Simplification matters. Especially for the many SME’s that make out the vast majority of NLA’s member companies in the Nordic countries.”

“Any initiative that can increase productivity and make road transport companies more competitive and efficient while ensuring level playing field is welcome,” says Torsten Laksafoss Holbek, CEO of the Nordic Logistics Association.

The Nordic Logistics Association (NLA) supports the IRU petition against the European Commission’s proposal for mandatory purchasing requirements of zero-emission vehicles and urges all haulage companies to sign.

The green transition in road transport must be driven by both enabling factors and a sound business case, where investments in vehicles, grid capacity, and charging infrastructure advance together.
