Congratulations to Sharjah Airport on achieving Level 4 of Airport Carbon Accreditation 👏👏

Having first joined the programme in 2014, the airport now aligns its carbon management strategy with global climate goals and continues to advance its decarbonisation efforts through a structured and long term approach.

Sharjah Airport has established a comprehensive carbon management framework that supports continuous emissions monitoring, effective stakeholder engagement and the implementation of targeted measures to reduce its environmental impact. Through these efforts, the airport is reducing both its carbon footprint and energy consumption while maintaining high operational standards 🌏✈️

Ahead of World Environment Day, climate change remains at the centre of the global conversation, with increasing attention on the urgent signals the Earth is sending and the actions needed in response.

The question is no longer whether change is coming, but how quickly we act.

Today, 118 airports worldwide are accredited at Levels 4 and 4+, aligning their carbon management strategies with global climate goals, including the Paris Agreement by UN Climate Change. These airports are transforming their operations with a focus on absolute emissions reductions while strengthening engagement across their airport communities.

At the same time, 30 airports worldwide have achieved Level 5 accreditation, the highest level of the programme. They have reached net zero emissions for Scopes 1 and 2 and are committed to achieving net zero Scope 3 emissions by 2050.

Airport Carbon Accreditation continues to support airports as they move further and faster on their decarbonisation journey 🌍🛫

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is changing what it looks like to taxi to a runway 🛬

Together with easyJet, Airbus and Menzies Aviation, the Amsterdam hub has begun operating the world's first electric TaxiBot, enabling aircraft to taxi to the runway with significantly lower fuel burn and emissions. When operating on the Polderbaan Runway, fuel savings can reach up to 65%, reducing CO₂, NOx and ultrafine particle emissions, while also improving air quality and reducing noise levels on the apron.

Already one of the first airports to achieve Level 5 of Airport Carbon Accreditation, Schiphol continues to test and scale practical solutions that support lower emission airport operations and the wider transition of aviation 🌍

A proud moment for airport decarbonisation in Airports Council International - ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East 🌎✈️

Nineteen airports received their Airport Carbon Accreditation certificates during the ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East in Bangkok.

The region now counts 102 accredited airports, with 7 having reached Level 5, the highest level of the programme, recognising airports that have achieved and maintained net zero carbon emissions for emissions under their direct control.

A special mention to Tokyo International Airport (.airport_official), which joined the programme directly at Level 4, and to Arar Airport, operated by
Cluster2 Company, which upgraded to Level 4+ to become the highest accredited airport in Saudi Arabia.

Ireland's busiest airport just reached its highest ever carbon milestone 🌍 🛫

Congratulations to daa and Dublin Airport on achieving Level 4+ of Airport Carbon Accreditation, the highest accreditation level in Irealnd.

Dublin Airport is pressing ahead towards net zero by 2050 with tangible action across its operations: expanding electric vehicle infrastructure, electrifying fleets and heating systems, investing in onsite solar energy and exploring lower carbon fuel and hydrogen solutions.

Well done to the entire team👏

Congratulations to King Abdulaziz International Airport operated by Jeddah Airports, on achieving Level 4 of Airport Carbon Accreditation.

The airport is strengthening its long term approach to decarbonisation by aligning its carbon management strategy with global climate goals and focusing on absolute emissions reductions.

Key actions supporting this transition include:
🔷 Replacing conventional airport vehicles with hybrid alternatives and expanding electric charging infrastructure
🔷 Increasing the use of solar energy across airport facilities
🔷 Advancing sustainable mobility and operational efficiency projects, including zero net carbon road infrastructure and air quality monitoring systems

𝑾𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑴𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑 𝑰𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆?

We asked Sarolta Katona, Head of Sustainability at Budapest Airport, and her answer was clear. Working collaboratively, learning from those who have already been through the process, and having access to practical guidance makes progress faster and more tangible.

As Sarolta puts it, peer support accelerates decarbonisation, turning individual experience into collective climate action 👥 🛫

What does the path to fully emission free ground operations actually look like in practice?

Rotterdam The Hague Airport, accredited at Level 5 of Airport Carbon Accreditation, is not waiting to find out. In collaboration with Toyota, the airport trialled a hydrogen electric pickup truck in a real operational setting, putting it to work for Bird Control activities across the airfield.

The trial is part of the airport's ambition to achieve fully emission free ground operations by 2030, with a focus on finding solutions for heavier and more demanding use cases where electrification alone may not be sufficient.

Hydrogen shows clear potential, particularly where longer range and quick refuelling are needed. At the same time, the trial surfaces what still needs to be addressed before wider deployment becomes possible, from infrastructure and investment to clear operational frameworks.

By testing both electric and hydrogen solutions side by side, Rotterdam The Hague Airport is building a practical understanding of how different technologies can complement each other on the road to decarbonisation.

Thinking of joining the Mentorship Initiative under Airport Carbon Accreditation but not sure where to start?

The initiative is designed to support airports looking to begin their accreditation journey or move up to a higher level. It pairs candidate airports with experienced mentors who share their knowledge, best practices and real-world experience.

Here are the steps to get involved 👇

15/04/2026

Budapest Airport, currently accredited at Level 4+ of Airport Carbon Accreditation, has experienced our Mentorship Initiative from both sides of the table, first as a Candidate, then as a Mentor.

Sarolta Katona, Head of Sustainability at Budapest Airport, shares what that journey looked like in practice and what it meant for the airport's decarbonisation progress 🌍✈️
