A historic moment for our industry: the IMO has adopted the first-ever MASS Code at MSC 111 in London.

From 1 July 2026, autonomous and remotely operated cargo ships will, for the first time, have a global safety framework covering everything from automation with crew on board to fully autonomous vessels. The Code starts on a voluntary basis, with a mandatory version targeted for 2032 under SOLAS.

For Seafar, this is the regulatory foundation we've been building toward. It gives shipowners, flag states, and technology providers a shared international standard for safe remote and autonomous operations and formally recognises the role of shore-based Remote Operations Centres.

Autonomy isn't about removing people. It's about putting them where they can operate safest and smartest. The MASS Code reflects exactly that.
Ready for what's next. ⚓

A world first on Belgium's inland waterways.
The André Celis Watertruck now passes through four locks fully unmanned between Zennegat and Leuven, remotely operated from the Seafar Remote Operations Center

Two years of testing with De Vlaamse Waterweg and Flanders Hydraulics Research have turned a pilot into a fully certified, scalable solution. The Zuid-Willemsvaart is next. ⚓

Yesterday was a good day at the IVR Congress in Lyon.
What stood out: the conversation about remote operations isn't about whether it works anymore. That's settled. It's about regulation, liability, and how to scale this safely.

Raymon Berkhout put it sharply: this is operational reality now, not a pilot.
For the sector, that means asking different questions. And giving different answers.

In summary: Great conversations, new connections, and a strong gathering of the inland shipping community.

Sun-kissed operations in Germany
Today, our remote operations are in full swing across Germany.

We started with Niedersachsen-2 on the Elbe Lateral Canal, followed by operations with Reinhold Deymann on the Mittellandkanal near Hannover
From our Remote Operations Centers, we continue to support safe, efficient navigation, wherever our vessels operate.
Real operations. Real impact. Every day.

Remote operations: proven impact for inland shipping

The latest Panteia study confirms what we already see in practice: remote operations are delivering real value to the industry.

By enabling optimized crew models, operators can significantly reduce operating costs while making better use of both vessels and personnel.

At the same time, remote navigation offers a concrete answer to one of the sector’s biggest challenges: the growing shortage of qualified crew. By supporting captains from shore, we create more flexibility and make the profession more sustainable.

Finally, the study highlights the scalability of remote operations. The technology can be deployed across fleets, allowing operators to grow efficiently and future-proof their operations.

💡 From cost efficiency to crew support and scalability, remote operations are no longer a concept, but a reality.

A new milestone for remote inland navigation on the Rhine.

Seafar has received four additional recommendations from the Dutch and German delegations of the Central Commission for the Navigation of the Rhine (CCNR), allowing four more vessels to be remotely operated on the route between Gorinchem and Mondorf Veer.

This expansion enables us to continue building real-world operational experience on one of Europe's busiest waterways, with full crew on board, and brings us one step closer to the next phase: safely optimising crewing levels while a certified shore-based operator takes the helm.

Each recommendation earned is a proof point. Each vessel added is a step forward.

Thank you to HGK, DARI, CCNR, and to the Dutch and German delegations for their continued collaboration and trust.

On Friday, the Novandi 2 completed its first remote voyage on the Meuse, with Minister François Desquesnes on board to see it firsthand, alongside SPW.

What makes this significant: the new legislative framework now allows operators to evolve toward crew optimisation with remote operation, milestone by milestone. Each phase, night navigation, high water, busy waterways, unlocks the next.
Building trust, advancing together with industry and government, that's what turns innovation into reality. En avant! 🚢

A proud moment made possible by years of collaborative research within the NavAuWall consortium: thank you to our partners Novandi, Multitel, ULiège, DN&T, Logistics in Wallonia, and SPW for building this together.

In this video, we take you inside our Remote Operations Center (ROC) to show how seamless collaboration works between the captain on board and the captain at our ROC.
Remote navigation isn’t about replacing the skipper, it’s about teamwork. Clear communication, real-time data, and continuous monitoring ensure that control can be safely transferred whenever needed.

🔹 Live camera feeds
🔹 Radar & sensor data
🔹 Direct communication
🔹 Full situational awareness

Together, onboard crew and ROC operators create a safer, more efficient way of sailing.
