GLOBAL TRADE UNDER PRESSURE:
MIDDLE EAST UNREST RESHAPING SHIPPING AND AIR CARGO

The ongoing Middle East tension and the Iran conflict are creating major pressure on global trade, ocean shipping and air cargo operations. Rising fuel costs, route diversions, higher war-risk surcharges and capacity limitations are already affecting international logistics across Europe, the Middle East and North America.

Shipping lines and air cargo operators are adjusting their networks to manage disruptions, resulting in longer transit times and increasing operational costs. These developments demand stronger planning, faster decision-making and closer coordination across the global supply chain to maintain service continuity.

STRAIT OF HORMUZ TENSION RAISES GLOBAL CONCERN

The latest strategic review shows that the ongoing tension in the Strait of Hormuz is creating serious concern across global trade and energy markets. Continuous pressure between the US and Iran has increased risks for shipping activities and has caused uncertainty in international oil movement.

Experts believe that neither side can continue this prolonged standoff for a long time because of growing economic stress, rising security threats and increasing diplomatic pressure from the global community. The situation remains highly sensitive and requires careful monitoring.

In our view, peace and practical dialogue are the only sustainable solutions to avoid further disruption. Stability in this vital waterway is essential for global economic balance and regional security.

GLOBAL AIR CARGO UNDER PRESSURE AS MIDDLE EAST CONFLICT DRIVES COSTS AND DELAYS

The ongoing Middle East unrest is seriously disrupting global air cargo, especially in Asia. Airspace restrictions and longer routes have reduced capacity and increased transit time and freight costs. Rising fuel prices have forced airlines to cut capacity and raise rates, making shipments from South Asia to Europe and the USA more expensive and less reliable.

Asian trade routes are facing strong challenges as Gulf transit hubs are affected, leading to delays, congestion and higher logistics costs. Businesses are experiencing shipment delays and rising expenses while global supply chains remain unstable and unpredictable.

AIR CARGO WORLDWIDE – ONGOING SITUATION

The global air cargo sector remains in a fragile and transitional phase as geopolitical tension and rising fuel costs continue to reshape operational dynamics. Airlines and logistics providers are actively adapting through route optimization, capacity management and strategic planning, yet uncertainty still dominates the market.

In our view, the industry is remaining volatile in the short term and businesses must stay flexible, proactive and well-informed to sustain continuity and manage risks effectively.

GLOBAL SHIPPING IN TURMOIL :

MIDDLE EAST CONFLICT DISRUPTS SOUTH ASIA TRADE FLOWS

Rising tensions around the Strait of Hormuz are seriously affecting global shipping operations. Many vessels are now avoiding Gulf routes due to safety concerns, which is forcing them to travel through longer alternative paths. Because of this, shipping companies are adding higher war-risk charges and insurance costs. As a result, overall freight rates are increasing, transit times are becoming longer and vessel space is becoming harder to secure.

This situation is creating strong pressure on South Asian export-driven economies. South Asian countries are facing higher shipping costs, delays in delivery and less reliable schedules. Export sectors such as garments, FMCG and industrial goods are being directly impacted, making it more difficult to maintain smooth supply chain operations and meet international customer commitments.

Source: Reuters

SHIPPING SECTOR IMPACT – ONGOING SITUATION

The current crisis is still affecting global shipping, with many vessels taking longer routes, ports becoming congested and space availability remaining limited. Shipping lines are not fully returning to Gulf routes, while shippers are facing higher costs, delays and less reliable schedules. Rising war-risk charges, insurance issues and fuel price changes are making operations more difficult.

From a practical view, companies need flexible planning, alternative routes and clear communication with clients. In our opinion, until the situation becomes stable, the shipping sector will continue to face pressure and businesses must stay prepared to manage delays and higher costs.

AIR FREIGHT PRICES RISE AS CONFLICT AND FUEL COSTS STRAIN GLOBAL CAPACITY

Air freight prices are rising due to ongoing conflicts, disruptions and higher jet fuel costs. Longer flight routes are also increasing transport expenses, adding further pressure on global pricing. Demand has fallen by about 8% and cargo capacity is down around 3%, although the market is slowly recovering from a deeper earlier drop, with uneven improvement across regions.

Capacity shortages remain a key issue, especially in the Middle East and South Asia, where space is still limited compared to last year. While some increase in cargo movement and shifts from sea to air freight are helping, overall conditions remain unstable. Political tensions, inflation and fuel supply problems continue to keep prices high and disrupt operations.

RISING PRESSURE ON ASIAN AIR CARGO SECTOR AMID ONGOING SUPPLY CHAIN DISRUPTIONS:

Air cargo operations across Asia are facing increasing pressure as more shipments shift from sea freight to air freight due to ongoing disruptions in maritime trade routes. This shift is leading to congestion at major air cargo hubs and driving up freight rates. Limited airspace availability combined with strong and sustained demand is further reshaping capacity allocation across the region.

In our view, If the situation continues, the industry may face ongoing instability, with higher costs, longer delivery times and greater use of combined transport methods like air and sea. Companies will need better planning and stronger supply chains to handle these disruptions.

VESSEL SEIZURES INTENSIFY HORMUZ CRISIS, DISRUPTING KEY GLOBAL TRADE CHANNELS

Iran’s interception of two commercial container ships in the Strait of Hormuz marks a sharp escalation in regional tensions, reinforcing its tightening grip over one of the world’s most critical maritime corridors. Shipping activity has plunged dramatically, with only a handful of vessels transiting daily compared to normal volumes. Heightened military presence, warning fire incidents and risk of further seizures have compelled major carriers and insurers to suspend or reroute operations, intensifying uncertainty across global supply chains.

The disruption is reverberating across the logistics ecosystem, constraining tanker flows and containerized trade while inflating freight and insurance costs. With nearly a fifth of global energy shipments typically passing through this chokepoint, the current slowdown is already straining oil and LNG distribution networks.

HORMUZ DISRUPTION DRIVES STRUCTURAL SHIFT ACROSS SHIPPING AND AIR CARGO SECTORS :

The situation signals a transition from localized maritime risk to systemic trade disruption, where control of sea lanes is increasingly leveraged as geopolitical influence. For the shipping industry, prolonged instability may redefine routing norms, risk assessment frameworks and insurance structures. Simultaneously, pressure is shifting toward air logistics as urgent cargo diverts from sea routes, creating early signs of congestion and rate escalation across key Middle Eastern hubs & the air cargo sector faces mounting demand surges alongside operational constraints in contested airspace.

From a strategic standpoint, unless de-escalation restores confidence in safe passage, the global logistics landscape is likely to experience sustained volatility, with higher costs, longer transit times and a structural shift toward multimodal contingency planning.

IRAN SEIZES TWO COMMERCIAL VESSELS IN STRAIT OF HORMUZ

Iran has detained two foreign-flagged commercial cargo vessels in the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz, further escalating regional tensions. The action was carried out by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard amid a fragile geopolitical climate and ongoing friction with the United States. The vessels were intercepted while transiting this narrow yet highly significant maritime corridor, which facilitates a substantial portion of global energy and trade movements.

This development has triggered heightened concern across the global shipping and logistics sector, as the Strait remains a vital artery for nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply. Industry analysts caution that such incidents may disrupt supply chains, drive up freight and insurance costs and increase operational exposure for carriers navigating Middle East routes.

Source: The Guardian

STRATEGIC IMPLICATIONS FOR SHIPPING WORLD

From a strategic perspective, the situation underscores the growing vulnerability of critical maritime corridors to geopolitical volatility. Shipping stakeholders must adopt resilient and flexible logistics frameworks including route diversification, enhanced risk assessment and closer coordination with global partners.

In our view, proactive planning and agile decision-making will be essential to safeguard trade flows, minimize disruptions and sustain long-term operational stability in an increasingly uncertain global shipping landscape.

MARITIME DISRUPTION: STRAIT OF HORMUZ UPDATE

Around 20 vessels-initiated transit toward the Strait of Hormuz but quickly halted or reversed course, reflecting continued uncertainty despite Iran’s reopening signal. Shipping lines including CMA CGM remained cautious, seeking clarity on navigation safety, particularly risks such as sea mines. Transit is now conditional, requiring coordination with Iran’s IRGC and restricted to designated safe lanes. The International Maritime Organization is actively assessing compliance with global navigation norms.

AVIATION IMPACT:

Rising jet fuel and insurance costs are significantly pressuring airline economics, especially amid airspace disruptions. Financing for new aircraft is tightening, placing airlines with older fleets at a competitive disadvantage. Ongoing volatility is prompting stakeholders to reassess financial agreements, particularly clauses related to force majeure and risk exposure.

Source: Reuters

STRATEGIC IMPLICATIONS FOR SOUTH ASIAN TRADE

Disruptions across Middle East corridors are creating critical challenges for South Asian exports to Europe. Rising freight costs, longer transit times and higher insurance premiums are reducing trade competitiveness. Uncertain carrier schedules are further affecting supply chain reliability. Immediate diversification via hubs like Singapore and Colombo is essential.

In view of the current volatility, a proactive and adaptive logistics strategy is essential to sustain trade flow resilience, mitigate operational risks and preserve long-term commercial stability in an increasingly unpredictable global environment.

HORMUZ STRAIT REOPENS UNDER CEASEFIRE

Iran has temporarily reopened the Strait of Hormuz for commercial transit during a 10-day ceasefire linked to the Israel–Lebanon conflict, signaling cautious optimism across global markets. While the development has been welcomed in global circles, Iranian leadership has cautioned that continued U.S. naval pressure could quickly lead to renewed restrictions, underscoring persistent geopolitical tensions and an uncertain outlook.

Although the waterway is technically open, actual maritime movement remains subdued, far below normal volumes of over 100 vessels daily, as shipping operators adopt a wait-and-see stance amid security concerns including mines and regulatory uncertainty. Diplomatic signals suggest potential negotiations ahead, yet key disputes particularly around Iran’s nuclear programme and sanctions relief remain unsettled, leaving the situation fragile rather than fully stabilized.

Source: Reuters

STRATEGIC IMPLICATIONS FOR GLOBAL MARITIME TRADE

The partial reopening has eased immediate pressure on global oil supply chains, prompting a short-term drop in crude prices and improved market sentiment. However, leading carriers and insurers remain cautious due to unpredictable security dynamics, limited transit approvals and elevated risk exposure.

In our view, unless a clearly defined, mutually accepted and enforceable agreement is reached between the United States and Iran, the Strait of Hormuz is likely to remain operational only in a constrained and inconsistent manner. Rather than returning to full stability, maritime activity will continue to face periodic disruptions, driven by ongoing geopolitical tensions, security uncertainties and fluctuating regulatory controls, making true and lasting normalization difficult to achieve.
