Lund University leads a new network researching law, religion, and governance in post-imperial Muslim-majority societies. Eleven European universities are participating with 15 PhD students. Four of these will be based in Lund.

The grant will fund the new doctoral network MINARET. The researchers will study how constitutional change unfolds in Muslim-majority societies shaped by imperial legacies.

The project will focus on how Islamic values, legal traditions, and governance structures interact to shape legitimacy, citizenship, and security.

“By moving beyond rigid divides between secular and religious law, we will seek to identify how hybrid legal frameworks can strengthen democratic practices, enhance trust in institutions, and reduce reliance on coercive state power,” says project leader Rustamjon Urinboyev, a Lund University researcher in sociology of law who submitted the grant application.

Sweden is investing to build world leading research over the long term across eight strategic areas. Today, the VetenskapsrĂĄdet or Swedish Research Council positions Lund University as a key actor in the next generation of these initiatives, proposing us for inclusion in six new nationally funded research environments.

“Lund University is building research for the future. The fact that the Swedish Research Council has identified us in six of eight new areas is clear proof that our research is of the highest calibre. We are now ready to continue driving national knowledge development forward,” says Erik Renström, Vice-Chancellor of Lund University.

We are represented both as coordinators and partners across fields that will shape the next decade: quantum research, polar research, crisis preparedness and total defence, crime, education, and advanced materials.

Two of the proposed environments are led by Lund University:

• “Resilience in Crime Prevention (BRiC)" with University of Gothenburg, Linnaeus University and Malmö University.

• “Materials 4.0 Sweden: Lund–Chalmers" with Chalmers University of Technology

Congratulations to Katarina Jacobsson, professor of social work at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Lars-Erik Wernersson, professor of nanoelectronics at The Faculty of Engineering at Lund University, and all contributing colleagues.

In total, the Swedish Research Council recommends that 16 research environments receive funding, the government will make the final decision.

Lobuche to Gorakshep

This segment tends to take two to three hours, during which you'll gain almost 300 meters in altitude. But let me tell you, every step feels like a lot of work at this point. The lower oxygen levels impact your ability to move forward.

As always, the surrounding mountains play hide-and-seek with each other. Some peaks reveal themselves while others remain in mystery. The rugged terrain, the crisp air, and the sheer majesty of the Himalayas – it's an experience like no other.

Before finally reaching Gorakshep, we crossed over the Changri Shar Glacier, originating from the surrounding peaks of Pumori (7,161m), Changri (6,027m), and Chumbu (6,859m).
