The Mercantile Marine Department came into existence during British period as a branch office of the Calcutta Mercantile Marine Department. After partition of India, during the Pakistan period, it was under the Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Communication and under the Ministry of Defense respectively. After Liberation war and independence of Bangladesh, this Department was under Minist

ry of Communication (Port, Shipping & IWT Division). Mission

To ensure safe, secure and environmentally responsible shipping that meets global challenges and also, to cater economic needs of Bangladesh by supporting growth of maritime activities in the country. Vision
