Donnington Airpark

Donnington Airpark Privately-owned airpark at Woodstock, 40 km from Townsville on the Flinders Highway. Hangarage available when vacancies arise.

Donnington Airpark is a privately-owned airpark catering for a range of aviation activities including ultralights, gyrocopters, gliding, homebuilts, general and commercial aviation. It is owned by Ray & Doris Smith and was created from virgin bush after they purchased the former grazing property in 1969. From 1979 to 1993 inclusive it was also home to the Donnington Airshow & Country Fly-In, a maj

or event in North Queensland's aviation calendar during those years. A landing fee of $10 applies with $5 per day parking. Rural ALA with a small population of transient wallabies and kangaroos - clearing run advised, especially early morning or late afternoon.

Just in case there was any doubt, the airpark is definitely unserviceable due to the unprecedented rain event and is officially closed for operations until further notice.

Another of our band of dedicated airshow volunteers has passed on. Brian Strathdee had a massive stroke recently and did not recover. His farewell will be held from 4-30 pm tomorrow, Wednesday 20th September at the Ayr Showgrounds Hall. Dress casual, no flowers by request. Refreshments and sharing of memories afterwards. You may remember Brian for his cheeky humour and laconic attitude in the bar. Usually he'd be out harvesting cane or ploughing fields until dark and would then race up to help out in the bar on the Saturday night. Brian was also responsible for re-aligning the creek at the end of the main runway, in his other guise as an earthmoving contractor. RIP, old mate.

The unfortunate light aircraft crash reported earlier today at Woodstock (as per the Channel 7 News page) did not happen at Donnington Airpark - it appears to have been at Ace Airfield, which is a different airfield several kilometres away. Our thoughts are with the pilot and passenger who have sustained injuries in this crash.

Another of our dedicated former airshow volunteers passed away last Friday. Steve Iliff drove up from Brisbane several years in succession to help us with the event. He will be sadly missed. His funeral is at St Andrew's Indooroopilly (Brisbane) at 11 am Wednesday 3rd August with a wake at the Breakfast Creek Hotel afterwards.

I have created a new "group page" https://www.facebook.com/groups/996075067150739/permalink/996079590483620/?comment_id=996087850482794¬if_t=group_comment¬if_id=1460969201578165 which will allow visitors to post on the Timeline rather than being shunted to the side-panels as happens now with this "business page". Hopefully this group page will lead to more history being posted and a vibrant community also for current users of the airpark. I have added a few people to kick-start the group page - please join the group page and feel free to post your memories, queries or current activities as you see fit. :-)

Well, it has taken a while but I finally have some content on YouTube! With thanks to friends Martin Lawlor and George Koulakis for their assistance with video conversions and editing, I have today uploaded a little "doco" about the early days of the ultralights at Donnington Airpark. It started life as 8mm footage shot by the Super 8MM Film Club of Townsville, was edited and produced by member Don Pickett, transferred to VHS tape and passed to my parents, then years later I managed to copy that to a DVD format and now finally it is preserved in the digital domain. It is historical (hysterical?) footage showing a typical flying day for the Super Ultralight Aircraft Association of Townsville (SULAA) members and their Skycraft Scout ultralights at what was then a fairly "new" Donnington Airpark (mid to late 1970's). Hope you enjoy it for what it is (certainly won't win any Oscars!) and feel free to share. :-) https://youtu.be/d43-sVc1_uM
