🚛 You don’t build a reputation on what you’re going to do. You build it on what you actually do.

In Episode 4 of Doin’ the Business, Thomasin reflects on completing her MBA while raising two babies in two years, and the constant drive she shares with Graham to keep learning, growing and moving forward.

For both of them, standing still has never really been an option.

There’s always another challenge, another idea, another skill to build, and another opportunity to improve.

As Graham puts it:

“You’re never going to get a reputation on what you’re going to do. You’ve actually got to go and do it.”

A simple lesson, but one that says a lot about the mindset behind Wickham Freight Lines.

Flashback to the Casino Truck Show last month 🚛📸

August 1st was a pretty special day for the Wickham Freight Lines team, with the restored Grey Ghost making its debut and plenty of familiar faces stopping by to check it out.

We’ve shared a few moments from the day already, but these photos were too good not to look back on.

From the conversations and stories to seeing the Grey Ghost back out in front of the trucking community, it was a great reminder of just how much history and pride sits behind this truck.

A few more moments from a day we won’t forget. 👻

⚠️ Trigger Warning: This episode includes discussion around mental health, depression and the challenges people can face when seeking support.

🧠 Long hours on the road can mean a lot of time alone with your own thoughts.
With today being R U OK? Day, this conversation from Episode 4 of Doin’ the Business feels especially important.

Graham and Thomasin talk openly about mental health in the transport industry and the unique challenges drivers can face when they spend long hours behind the wheel, often with little more than their own thoughts for company.

When someone is already under pressure, those thoughts can quickly start heading in the wrong direction.

They also discuss how social media has changed the way we consume information, the importance of actually talking to people, and one of the biggest challenges facing anyone who decides they need professional support: sometimes the help simply isn’t available quickly enough.

R U OK? Day is an important reminder that you don’t need to be an expert to check in with someone. Sometimes simply asking the question, taking the time to listen and continuing the conversation can make a real difference. 💛

For those working in transport, where long hours, time away from family and isolation can all take their toll, looking out for the people around us matters.

Today, and every day, take a moment to check in with a mate, colleague, family member or driver.
Ask the question. Listen. Make the time to talk. ❤️

🚛 Episode 4 of Doin' the Business is out now!

This episode gets into something that’s easy to overlook: just how important the transport industry is to everyday life across Australia.

Graham and Thomasin reflect on the role transport plays in communities across the country, and the extraordinary effort drivers put in during the COVID period to keep freight moving, shelves stocked and supply chains operating. 👏

From constant testing across multiple states to spending days away from home under incredibly difficult conditions, drivers kept showing up and getting the job done.

It’s a reminder that transport is everywhere, and the people behind it deserve a lot more recognition than they often receive.

“They said we couldn’t do it.”

Kenworth didn’t want to know about it. Cummins wouldn’t even sell them the engines at first. But when Wickham Freight Lines was faced with a fleet of EGR-powered trucks that simply weren’t delivering, the team decided to find their own solution.

In this snippet from Episode 3 of Doing The Business, Chris and Graham look back on the huge decision to convert the trucks, doing their own wiring, learning how the trucks communicated with the engines and ultimately proving the doubters wrong.

And that wasn’t the end of it.

They also take us inside the story of the 1989 T600 they’re sitting in today, a truck that survived a major accident, received another cab and went on to clock around 1.8 million kilometres.

A great example of the problem-solving, persistence and mechanical knowledge that has helped shape Wickham Freight Lines over the years.

“It was like driving a 12-hour race at Bathurst every night of the week.”

At the recent Casino Truck Show, we caught up with one of the original Grey Ghost drivers to hear what life was really like on the highway in the early days.

Before CB radios became common, drivers relied on flashing headlights and blinkers to communicate when overtaking, working together to move convoys safely up the highway.

Then CBs arrived and changed everything.

Drivers could communicate instantly, share what was happening further up the road and, much to the frustration of police at the time, warn each other about patrols.

When authorities tried to ban them, truck drivers pushed back. For several Friday nights, huge convoys reportedly rolled out of Melbourne, sometimes with up to 150 or 200 trucks, all sitting right on the speed limit.

Within weeks, CB radios were legal.

Another great story from an era when trucking was very different to what we know today.
