🇳🇴 Norway in a Nutshell®: From Blueprint to Reality!

For over three decades, I have been selling the iconic Norway in a Nutshell® travel package to eager adventurers. This year, I finally stepped out from behind the desk to navigate this bucket-list journey first-hand and wow, what an absolute dream experience!

Our adventure kicked off in vibrant Bergen, where we rode the famous Fløibanen Funicular up the mountain, strolled around the peaceful lake, sampled locally brewed b**r in the brilliant sunshine, and indulged in the freshest seafood straight from the historic Fish Market.

From there, the true transit masterpiece began. We boarded the train from Bergen to Voss, hopped a scenic bus over to Gudvangen, and boarded our vessel for a magical, two-hour cruise. Gliding through the dramatic, towering rock walls of the UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord and Aurlandsfjord, we were surrounded by dozens of cascading waterfalls, including the immense, roaring Kjelfossen.

We decided to base ourselves in Flåm for an extra night, giving us a much-needed full day to truly slow down and immerse ourselves in the breathtaking valley. Taking advantage of the extra time, we booked a rigid inflatable boat (RIB) 3 hour fjord safari as an added extra, which turned out to be an absolute highlight!
The safari took us to up close and personal to all the waterfalls of the fjords but a special highlight was the fairytale village of Underdal, where goats outnumber people 6 to 1.

We spent some time here having a traditional Norwegian cheese tasting, sampling their famous white goat cheese and that rich, sweet Norwegian brown cheese called brunost which is especially delicious with some blueberry jam!

Between the dramatic fjord views, the historic 12th-century stave church, and the local goats roaming around, "Wonder Valley" completely stole our hearts. 🐐🧀🇳🇴 This picture-perfect spot actually served as the visual inspiration for Arendelle in Disney’s Frozen!

The grand finale? Boarding the legendary Flåm Railway (Flåmsbana) from Flåm up to Myrdal, climbing one of the steepest standard-gauge tracks in the world past the roaring Kjosfossen waterfall, before catching our connecting train straight into Oslo.

Unforgettable memories ✨

Some travel days are simply magical. It’s so often the seemingly incidental places, the ones we didn’t expect to steal the show, that leave us with the greatest treasures.

Yesterday was one of those days. 💙

With a little travel knowledge and a few good contacts, we were able to step off the beaten path and make the most of our long port day in Lofoten, rather than simply choosing one of the run-of-the-mill sightseeing options.

Surrounded by the extraordinary beauty of western Lofoten; dramatic mountains, turquoise waters, tiny fishing villages and postcard-perfect scenery around Flakstadøya, Rambergstranda, Moskenesøya, Reine, Sakrisøy and Hamnøy.

It was only the fourth clear blue-sky day of the summer ☀️ and, as if that wasn’t enough, we were then treated to the completely unexpected sight of Northern Lights dancing across a summer sky. 💚✨

❄️ From the Arctic Circle to the North Cape! 🌍🐻‍❄️

We’ve officially crossed the Arctic Circle and this adventure has taken us well and truly into the land of ice, wildlife and some seriously incredible landscapes.

Our time in Longyearbyen, Svalbard delivered the kind of scenery you never forget. We explored two spectacular glaciers, listening to the incredible crack, rumble and roar of ice carving its way into the sea. With a hot berry drink in hand, a local favourite for keeping the chill at bay, we watched for wildlife and were rewarded with seals, minke whales and plenty of puffins.

The one creature that remained firmly on our wish list? The elusive polar bear 🐻‍❄️. Sadly, no sightings for us this time, but after experiencing Svalbard first-hand, I’ve picked up plenty of tips and tricks for clients wanting to maximise their chances of seeing these magnificent animals in the wild. Sometimes the chase is just as exciting as the sighting!

Then it was onwards to Honningsvåg, a tiny northern Norwegian town tucked around a bay on the Barents Sea. From here we headed to the legendary North Cape, standing at the very top of mainland Europe with some truly spectacular fjord views stretching out before us. We were greeted by many reindeer grazing in the final days of summer, seemingly completely unfazed by the chilly conditions. 🦌

FUN ARCTIC FACT: when the reindeer begin their winter migration south from the far north, they swim across rivers and waterways together in huge groups - what a sight that would be to see!

From glaciers and whales to reindeer and the edge of Europe… this is definitely a journey that keeps delivering the WOW moments

The land of fire, ice, waterfalls, geysers and puffins! 🇮🇸

Reykjavík is every bit as remarkable as I imagined and absolutely worth the wait but it wasn’t until we started driving that I really appreciated the vastness of Iceland. Mile after mile of lava fields, rugged, seemingly unusable land and extraordinary natural wonders appearing right alongside the road.

The Blue Lagoon was our very first stop and very much a highlight. There is something pretty special about sitting in those milky-blue geothermal waters surrounded by black lava fields. It feels completely otherworldly and it was the perfect place to slow down, warm up and simply enjoy the experience.

There’s certainly no need to waterfall chase here…the waterfalls literally come to you and one of the things I’ve loved most is how little development there is around these incredible places. No garish hotels or rows of souvenir shops competing for attention; just nature being allowed to showcase itself at its very best.

Over the past few days we’ve travelled Iceland’s Southern Coast and the Golden Circle, with two long days on the road but every moment has been an absolute pleasure.

We’ve marvelled at three thundering waterfalls; Gullfoss, the magnificent Skógafoss and the beautiful Seljalandsfoss, where you can actually walk behind the falling water. We’ve seen Kerið volcanic crater, stood beneath the immense Sólheimajökull glacier, experienced the bubbling geothermal landscape and watched the famous Geysir erupt with natural hot springs and geothermal activity everywhere you look.

Our final stop Þingvellir (Thingvellir) National Park, where Iceland’s historic open-air parliament, the Alþingi was established around 930 and continued meeting for centuries. Standing in the landscape where Icelanders gathered to make laws and settle disputes over 1,000 years ago adds an incredible layer of history to an already extraordinary place. Þingvellir is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is also where the dramatic rift between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates can be seen.

Iceland really is a destination where fire and ice, history and nature all collide and I’m already wondering how long I can wait before coming back!

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿💙 Edinburgh was the perfect bookend to our Bespoke Ireland & Scotland adventure.

I knew this city had something for everyone, but the vibe in August, with the Fringe and The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, was something even I was unprepared for. Talented buskers and performers line the streets, pubs are packed, theatres are buzzing and parks seem to have something happening around every corner. It is vibrant, chaotic, creative and completely infectious.

We climbed (and climbed is definitely the right word) to Arthur’s Seat after a wonderful city introduction walk, packed with tips and hints to help everyone make the most of their time in Edinburgh. There were a few new suitcases purchased along the way to take all those Scottish treasures home😉

Then came the climax of the trip… leaving the best until last with premium tickets to the 2026 Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, **A Call to Gather**.

The Kiwis brought the haka, but the Qatar Police Academy Band and Drill Team were phenomenal. The colour, atmosphere, music and sheer precision of it all need to be seen to be believed. With Edinburgh Castle as our backdrop, surrounded by thousands of people from all over the world, watching this extraordinary spectacle unfold was a pretty special way to finish our journey.

If you’re considering Scotland, August is a very good reason to go. The combination of the Fringe and the Tattoo creates an atmosphere that is quite unlike anywhere else.

These are the moments that make my heart sing. I know how incredibly fortunate I am to have these experiences, to share them with wonderful people and to create memories that I know I will treasure forever. ❤️

But just like that, our group has said its farewells and scattered off to all corners of the globe.

For Kev and me, there’s no rest just yet… we’re off to Iceland, Svalbard and Norway and we’re just a tad excited! 🥂✈️❄️

Culloden… Oh La La! 🥃🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I knew when I was putting this itinerary together that I wanted an eclectic mix of accommodation, but I have to admit, Culloden House Hotel was one I was looking forward to the most and it absolutely did not disappoint.

Of course, we did it the Italktravel Warners Bay way. 😉

A private setting for dinner, bagpipes to let us know dinner was ready (because why simply knock on the door when you can have a piper), with a private wh**ky pre-cursor tasting in our own room.

And then there’s the history…

Culloden House dates back in part to a much earlier house on the site, but it was here in 1745 that Bonnie Prince Charlie commandeered the house as his lodging and battlefield headquarters in the days leading up to the Battle of Culloden. On 16 April 1746, the Jacobite army suffered a devastating defeat on Culloden Moor. In less than an hour, around 1,600 men were killed, approximately 1,500 of them Jacobites, changing the course of Scottish history forever.

Walking through the house knowing all of this makes the beautiful rooms, old fireplaces, portraits and little details feel very different. It’s not just a hotel; you are sleeping inside a piece of Scotland’s story.

Before checking in, we had our own Nessie hunt at Loch Ness (and yes… we found her 😉) before heading to Culloden Battlefield for a brilliant tour with the National Trust for Scotland. It was one of those history lessons that manages to be incredibly informative without making your head spin with dates and names, exactly my kind of history lesson!

This is exactly why we love creating these journeys.

But the real magic is in how you put it all together.
