Who says a river cruise has to mean museum after museum for your teens? With Avalon Waterways' Active & Discovery itineraries, that couldn't be further from the truth.

Each day, there's a genuine menu of included excursions to choose from, so every member of the family can pick what actually interests them rather than being herded onto the same guided tour.

1️⃣ Active: biking through vineyard villages, kayaking or canoeing along the river, hiking up to a hillside castle, even guided jogging tours for the early risers
2️⃣ Discovery: hands on cooking classes, local art and painting workshops, dance lessons, and genuine cultural immersion with locals
3️⃣ Classic: the traditional guided sightseeing and history for anyone who still wants that cathedral tour
4️⃣ Independent: the freedom to skip all of it and just explore on your own

With an average of 22 included excursions across a single Active & Discovery itinerary, this is exactly why river cruising suits families so well. The teenager who wants to be out kayaking doesn't have to sit through a two hour history lecture, and the family member who loves to cook doesn't have to miss out on their class because someone else wanted to hike.

Everyone picks their own adventure, and everyone meets back onboard with a story to tell.

Signs your family holiday routine needs a refresh: 🧳

1️⃣ You're booking the same trip you did five years ago, kids included whether they still want to come or not
2️⃣ "Flop and drop" is starting to feel like everyone quietly avoiding each other in the same resort
3️⃣ Nobody can agree on plans anymore, so nobody plans anything

If any of that sounds familiar, it might be time to rethink the shape of the trip, not just the destination.

Start the Intake Form, fill it in with any holiday ideas or any concerns you may have, and we'll book a complimentary consultation to look at building something right for your family.

Have you ever thought about cycling to the next port?

On some river cruise itineraries, you can hop off the ship in the morning, cycle along the river to the next town while the ship cruises ahead, and everyone's back onboard together by dinner, comparing photos of the vineyards and villages they passed on the way.

It's active without being exhausting, social without needing constant supervision, and genuinely one of the more memorable days tweens and teens will get on any family holiday. No screens in sight, just fresh air, a bike, and a new town waiting at the other end.

Want to see which routes offer this kind of day. Fill out my Intake Form and I'll follow up to set up your complimentary consultation.

People often ask me how to actually choose between rivers, so here's a proper breakdown of four family friendly options and who each one suits best.

The Danube runs through Budapest, Vienna, and smaller towns like Passau, with fairytale architecture, easy cycling paths right along the river, and a good mix of big city energy and quiet villages. It works well as a first river cruise, especially for families with primary aged kids through to teens, since distances between stops are short and there's always something visually striking to look at.

The Rhine leans into castles and vineyards, with towns you can properly explore in an afternoon. It suits families who like history and want kids to actually see medieval architecture up close rather than just hear about it in a classroom. The pace here tends to be a touch slower, which works well if you've got a mixed age group including younger children.

The Seine takes you through Paris and into Normandy, blending a big city with quieter countryside and significant historical sites. This one tends to resonate with families who have older kids or teens doing modern history at school, since the connection between what they're studying and what they're standing in front of is hard to replicate any other way.

The Mekong is a different experience altogether, moving through Vietnam and Cambodia with floating markets, temples, and a much stronger cultural immersion element. It suits families with older tweens and teens who are ready for a trip that challenges them a little and opens up a part of the world they haven't seen.

None of these is objectively the best. It genuinely comes down to your kids' ages, what they're interested in, and how much cultural contrast versus familiarity you want from the trip. That's the exact conversation I have with families in a consultation, working out which river actually fits rather than picking based on a brochure photo.

So many things to do in each day. Don’t let time slip by.

If river cruising is on your radar for 2027, or even 2028, now's the time to start looking into it.

Plot twist: I'm not doing this alone.

This photo was taken at a recent travel advisor and supplier day in Melbourne, with a few of the wonderful people I get to work alongside at Connected Travel. Every time we're together I walk away inspired. Each of us has our own speciality. Some live and breathe destination weddings, some plan expeditions to the ends of the earth, some are all about wildlife and nature, and others design gloriously nerdy trips for fans and history buffs. My corner is holidays that bring families with tweens and teens back together.

This comes in handy more often than you'd think, especially with multigenerational groups. When Grandpa's dream is Antarctica and your 15 year old just wants to see orangutans, I've got people I can call.

So you can always start with me. If your trip needs a little extra expertise, I'll consult with my colleagues. And if someone else is the better fit for what you need, I'll tell you honestly and connect you with them. That's what I love most about Connected. We're a growing team who genuinely back each other, and we're all here to back you.

Meet the S.S. Émilie. Uniworld's newest ship on the Danube, and one worth knowing about if river cruising is on your family's radar.

1️⃣ An intimate ship, carrying just 154 guests across 77 suites and staterooms. No crowds, no queues, just a small, personal way to experience the Danube together.
2️⃣ Designed around Gustav Klimt's Art Nouveau style, with rich colour and detail throughout. It's the kind of ship that makes an impression on kids the moment they step aboard, not just the adults.
3️⃣ Complimentary bicycles onboard, so port to port cycling is genuinely an option most days. Families can hop off, ride along the river to the next town, and be back onboard in time for dinner.
4️⃣ A spa, fitness centre, and relaxed lounge spaces mean there's somewhere for everyone to unwind, whether that's the grandparents or the teens. And it sails as part of Uniworld's Generations Collection, their family focused sailings.
5️⃣ A small ship means a different kind of exploring. You're not herded off in a crowd, you're stepping straight into a town that feels like it's yours for the day.

Curious whether the S.S. Émilie could be the right fit for your family's Danube cruise? Fill out my Intake Form and let's talk it through in a complimentary consultation.

Real talk: what's stopping you from booking a family trip right now?

Money, time, the fear nobody will agree on anything, all valid. I ask because I built this business around solving exactly this.

No pressure, just curious what's in the way for you.

River cruising isn't just great for families with kids. It's just as good for the grandparents, and that's exactly why it works so well for multigenerational trips.

1️⃣ Unpack once, wake up somewhere new each morning. No suitcases in and out of hotels, no juggling everyone's luggage between cities.
2️⃣ A handful of different shore excursions on offer most days: a historical walking tour, an active option like kayaking down the river, a foodie tour through local markets, or simply staying put in a cafe and watching the town go by.
3️⃣ Every activity level and interest genuinely catered for, from the grandparent who wants a slower pace to the teenager who wants to be outside doing something.
4️⃣ Nobody has to compromise on how they spend their day, and nobody has to talk anyone else into their idea of a good afternoon.

That's the real appeal for extended families. You don't have to be together every hour of every day to have a trip that feels shared. Everyone goes off and does what actually interests them, then meets back up over dinner, comparing what they saw and did that day. It's togetherness without anyone feeling boxed in.

Message me is you'd like to get started.

Before I attended a large cruise conference in Sydney a few weeks ago, I already had a feeling about river cruising for families. After the conference, I am convinced.

Unpack once. Dining, drinks and excursions included. Fall asleep in one country, wake up in another, with the view changing right outside your window while you're still in your pyjamas.

Here is the part that genuinely surprised me. A few suppliers hesitated when I said my niche was tweens, teens and multigenerational families, because river ships do not have kids clubs. That hesitation stuck with me, because it says kids clubs are what make older children welcome on a holiday.

I think it is the opposite. River cruising hands your kids something no kids club ever could. A market in Provence they can wander with you. A language they have never heard spoken all around them. A cathedral, a bike ride, a food they were sure they would hate and secretly loved. Some of it will flop. That is the whole point of travel, not just the parts you plan.

And if there is a slow afternoon, a deck of cards or a jigsaw on the sun deck has never once let a family down.

Active by day, properly rested by night. That balance is rare in family travel, and it is exactly why river cruising is my theme all through October. 🌍
