The first photo was taken by Mark Welsh a few weeks ago at the Elbow in Sandy Straits, just before he ran onto a sandbar. The second shot was taken today, showing what a difference a tide makes. The last shot is of our track, and I assure you we went around all the marks correctly, although they have certainly shifted. Mark Welsh

Delivery on Catalina 32 from Sydney to Mackay. We were supposed to sail to Cairns but unfortunately only made it to Mackay. We left Sydney with a strong breeze from behind which resulted in rolling seas. We had myself Daniel the owner his girlfriend Hope and his Dad John. Hope was sick for 2 days and dad couldn’t handle the helm and as we had no auto pilot we were going to have to hand steer some 10 days non stop to cairns. We decided to stop in at Southport yacht club to let dad off and get a replacement experienced sailor. By this time Hope was coming good so she decided to stay on. All was going well and everybody was holding there watches and we were powering towards Hamilton island on day 7 to top up fuel and make it to Cairns on day 9 but unfortunately disaster struck and we lost all steering 25 nautical miles east of Mackay. After some investigation we determined the rudder had completely fallen off so we radioed an emergency pan pan distress call for rescue. A passing ship picked up our radio comms and alerted marine rescue for us with the position I gave him. We were told it would take 3 hours to get to us so we just had to bob around in the ocean like a cork just off St Bees island and waited until a rescue vessel would reach us and tow us to Mackay marina. Our Rudder fell off at 6:30am and after many broken toe lines we we’re finally in the safe harbour of Mackay by 4pm that day. It was a real shame we couldn’t make it all the way to Cairns but everyone was safe and the yacht will now await repairs until the final journey to its home port. It was a memorable experience and the first time I have had to be rescued at sea but at the same time we were extremely lucky that we didn’t take on water and potentially sink. Anyway now back on land and await my next adventure.
