Portugal 2026 is underway with a full contingent of adventure seekers ready to hike and cycle their way through the lesser known corners of the country. The pace of life is slower, the roads are empty and there is history perched on every hilltop in the Altentejo region. Cork forests, medieval villages, impressive castles, endless stone walls, and fields of wildflowers line the way.

On each ICON tour we have a little fun with a progressive ‘award’ that gets passed on each day. Our flamenco dancer 💃 has travelled with us from Ronda to Seville, stomping 👠 and clapping 👏 her way into the hands of a new recipient each evening.

Awarded for deeds both noble and questionable, our dancing diva recognises acts of kindness, tom-foolery, heroism, even accidental comedy.

Eva, one of our amazing Spanish guides (photo 3) is a logistics wizz who worked very hard. One day, while we hiked 5km, mostly downhill, with a few stops to admire the view, discover an unfamiliar plant, have a quick snack - she moved 2 cars from the start location of the hike to our end point (with a taxi ride in between), and then hiked 5 kms uphill, to meet us at the halfway point, with lunch. First time an award has gone to a guide. Eva deserved it!

The cities of Andalusia - Granada, Cordoba and Seville - are vibrant, colourful and fascinating, full of history in every laneway, flowers in every plaza and lively bars in every neighbourhood. They are wonderfully walkable and incredibly photogenic. While the main attractions draw their fair share of visitors (and beg to be explored) these cities still feel more relaxed than Europe’s better-known destinations.

When we organise travel for our independent travellers, putting a trip together can take hours, days, weeks - sometimes even months. By the time our clients finally head off, we almost feel like we should be squeezing into the suitcase and coming along too.

And while our clients are travelling, some keep us completely in the loop, while others happily disappear off into the world and just reappear at the end with a tan and a camera roll full of photos (okay, maybe not, but you get the picture😉). Honestly, we don’t mind either way.

These two lovely humans - the ones with the groovy red bags who left last week - are keeping us updated, so naturally we are now travelling vicariously through them from the ICON office.

Latest message from the trail:

‘Hi Suzanne, Day 4 and we are sitting in Cheylard L’Eveque. Trek is more than amazing. Scenery is stunning, weather perfect. We are loving it all. Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you.’

Now, I may have taken the liberty of stealing a few of Gillie’s photos because they were simply too good not to share. I’m calling it ‘wish you were here?’.

Safe to say the Chemin de Stevenson is delivering the goods.

If you would like us to organise something like this for you . . . you know where to find us, link in the bio (or something like that!)

Lacing up and walking out from our hotel in the high mountain village of Capileira, we set out on a beautiful hiking path linking a string of Alpujarran villages. Each had its own charm with cobbled lanes, whitewashed houses, and sweeping views across the valleys. A bottle of local red wine didn’t seem out of place with our picnic lunch. A little more hiking before continuing on to the highest village of mainland Spain, Trevelez, famous for its cured hams.

Hiking and e-biking in southern Spain …it’s a thing!!!

We’re a bit behind with the posts as the days have been gloriously full of spectacular scenery, dusty trails, lots of laughs and that happy kind of exhaustion where you fall into bed each night knowing you squeezed every drop out of the day.

And honestly… that’s exactly what we came for.

Another couple of clients off on a slightly last-minute adventure - because sometimes life taps you on the shoulder and says, ‘What exactly are you waiting for?’

Like many people at the moment, they were feeling a little apprehensive about travelling to Europe with all that’s happening in the world. But in the end they decided life is too short. Eat the cake. Buy the shoes. Take the holiday.

So here they are at the airport, checked-in and champagne in hand. First stop - a long weekend in Paris before taking the train to crisscross some of the beautiful places that not everybody gets to see in the UK. Finishing with a family wedding in the Cotswolds.

Their itinerary was literally hot off the press - finalised less than 48 hours ago - but that’s sometimes how the best adventures begin.

Leaving Australia under beautiful blue skies and hoping they take a little of that sunshine with them.

Bon voyage guys - enjoy every minute. 🥂✈️

One of the absolute highlights of our Spain tour is the legendary Caminito del Rey, aka ‘The King’s Little Pathway’, which sounds adorable until you’re clinging to a boardwalk bolted to the side of a giant limestone gorge.

Originally, the pathway was built for hydroelectric workers moving between power stations and dams through the El Chorro Gorge. How is that even possible? A restored new pathway, solid and safe, opened in 2015.

At 7km long, it’s equal parts breathtaking scenery, engineering marvel and ‘don’t look down’ moments.

Our group tackled it with gusto today. Everyone strutted confidently, no sideways shuffling from anyone. All survived.

Would you do it?

Just a little reminder that while the ICON tour groups are off gallivanting around Morocco & Spain, we’re still quietly sending plenty of independent travellers off on their own adventures too.

Look at this image for packing goals 👇Today’s airport goodbye photo features two very organised humans about to tackle the Chemin de Stevenson - all 270km of it. That’s a lot of walking. Like . . . a LOT of walking.

Their reward at the end? A well-earned stay in the gorgeous French village of Uzès, followed by a few Paris highlights to finish things off in style. Now that’s a travel balance we can get behind.

We absolutely love getting those ‘we’re at the airport!’ goodbye texts and photos from clients. There’s something exciting about seeing months of planning finally turn into an actual adventure.

Bon voyage guys - may the legs stay strong, the backpacks stay light and the wine pours generously at the finish line. 🇫🇷🥾🍷
