Austroads Austroads is the collective of Australian and New Zealand road transport and traffic agencies

Austroads members are collectively responsible for the management of over 900,000 kilometres of roads valued at more than $200 billion representing the single largest community asset in Australia and New Zealand. Each year in excess of $18 billion is spent on roads across Australia and New Zealand which is a significant investment by all levels of government. This page will keep users informed abo

🚗📡 New guidance sets out nationally coordinated design principles to help road agencies across Australia and New Zealand adapt roads and infrastructure for emerging mobility technologies. A key focus is maintaining alignment between physical and digital infrastructure.

“This work reflects the environment agencies are operating in today, where new vehicle technologies are emerging alongside existing traffic,” said Joanne Vanselow, Austroads Vehicle and Technology Program Manager. “The principles are adaptable, allowing agencies to apply them in ways that reflect local context, operational needs and technology readiness.”

🚶‍♀️ New Austroads research, released as part of the Keeping People Safe When Walking project, is strengthening the evidence base for decisions affecting people’s safety when walking.

Three new reports will help transport agencies and practitioners better understand patterns of pedestrian risk and consider how existing approaches could evolve – particularly in urban environments where most pedestrian deaths and serious injuries occur.

New Austroads guidance puts people at the centre of safer road system design. It focuses on human factors and how people interact with vehicles, technology and the road environment, including the role of driver distraction in road safety outcomes.

Three new guidelines provide practical tools to support human‑centered system design, inform in‑vehicle technology development, and promote more consistent consideration of human factors and driver distraction in crash data collection across Australia and New Zealand.

👉 Learn more and register for our two upcoming webinars on 18 and 25 May, where the guidance will be introduced in detail: https://austroads.gov.au/latest-news/new-austroads-guidance-putting-people-at-the-centre-of-safer-road-system-design

Registration is free and recordings will be provided.

Road transport systems involve complex interactions between people, vehicles, technology and the road environment. Understanding how human behaviour interacts with these elements underpins coordinated system design, assessment and operation to improve road safety.

New tender opportunity: Improving the Harmonisation of Austroads Technical Specifications for Pavements

Austroads is seeking proposals from consultants to undertake a targeted research project to support the development of Austroads Technical Specifications (ATS) for pavements.

This project will investigate source rock aggregate properties ised in unbound granular (gravel) pavement materials, addressing key differences in material properties and test methods that currently hinder national harmonisation across jurisdictions.

Key activities include:

• reviewing unbound granular pavement specifications across Austroads members
• comparing test methods and identifying correlations between competing tests
• recommending a single preferred test method for key source rock properties
• coordinating sampling and NATA-accredited laboratory testing across multiple jurisdictions
• analysing results, engaging with industry stakeholders and assessing impacts of test method changes
• delivering a technical report, project data set and a webinar outlining findings and recommendations.

Deliverables include:

• a detailed technical report with recommended test methods and correlations
• project data with populated metadata
• webinar presenting outcomes and implications
• recommendations for further research to enable future ATS development.

For full tender details, including the scope and response requirements, head to the link below.

Applications close on Monday 4 May at 3 pm AEST.

The Austroads Board has established a Public and Active Transport Task Force, approved as a two-year pilot to strengthen national collaboration and support better public transport and active transport outcomes in Australia and New Zealand.

Public and active transport are essential to reducing our dependence on fossil fuels, and they also contribute to more connected communities, supporting safer streets, better health and lower emissions. The Task Force will promote and oversee projects that improve how these modes are planned, delivered, operated and integrated within the broader transport system.

The first meeting of the Task Force will be held on 2 April 2026, marking an important step in elevating public and active transport within Austroads’ formal governance structures.

Read the full article to learn more about the purpose of the Task Force and what it aims to deliver.

We look forward to sharing more updates as work progresses.

has compiled a list of ready-to-use resources to support , , and across Australia and New Zealand.

“We have brought this material together because it is particularly relevant as agencies consider a wider range of transport options in light of global challenges. These materials provide practical guidance that can be drawn on in the current operating environment when planning and managing transport networks for all users.” said Dr Geoff Allan, Chief Executive of Austroads.

is sharing an opportunity to contribute to current academic research examining how organisations manage safety across grey fleet and traditional fleet vehicles.

Led by PhD candidate Zac Tucker (MAIC–Griffith University Road Safety Research Collaboration), the study explores differences in safety management practices for privately owned vehicles used for work compared with company‑provided vehicles, with the aim of building a clearer understanding of risks and informing future road safety efforts.

Individuals aged 18 or over who drive a privately owned or company‑provided light vehicle (under 4.5t) for work, or who manage such vehicles within their organisation, are invited to take part by completing a short anonymous survey or registering for a voluntary online interview.

Participation is entirely optional, and sharing this opportunity does not indicate Austroads’ endorsement of the research or its outcomes.

Austroads is pleased to announce that Jon Whelan, Chief Executive of the South Australian Department for Infrastructure and Transport, has been appointed as the new Chair of the Austroads Board.

Jon brings four decades of experience with South Australia’s transport sector, where he oversees major state transport projects, including South Australia’s largest and most complex infrastructure project, the 15.4-billion-dollar River Torrens to Darlington Project. He joined the Austroads Board in early 2025.

Austroads Chief Executive, Dr Geoff Allan, welcomed the appointment.

“Jon brings an impressive breadth of knowledge and experience to the Austroads Board. He has been a valuable member of the Board, and I am excited to work with him as Chair.”

Jon succeeds Louise McCormick, who has taken up a new role with the Northern Territory Government, ending her historic tenure as the first woman to hold the position of Chair of the Austroads Board.

Dr Allan acknowledged her contribution.

“I am excited to see what Louise does in the future. She has had an immeasurably positive impact on Austroads, and we are very thankful for her leadership during her time as Chair.”
