Some of the world's most valuable sports horses are trapped in the Middle East due to the war causing a ban on air travel.
The largest collection of these priceless horses are stranded in Al Shaqab which is the home to both Longines Global Champions Tour 2026 FEI Jumping and FEI Dressage.
Some of the horses spent their winter season there and the Doha Global was their last show date before returning to Europe... Cargo and commercial flights out of Doha have been suspended since Saturday the 28th of February.
One of the cargo flights with horses from Europe also had to turn around and divert back home. Currently, some owners, grooms and those in care of these horses have apparently received no communication from the as to shows that have been cancelled. However, Longines did make a formal announcement yesterday that reached multiple equestrian news channels.
"We hear bombings in the distance, but around the world is fine. We take the horses out when it's calmer" said one groom on site at Al Shaqab. Owners, riders and grooms are very nervous at Al Shaqab as it is quite close to an American base.
Currently, there is no repatriation date possible for these horses and the teams behind them until the war stops, the airspace becomes safe again and flights are rescheduled.
Our thoughts are with all the people in the Middle East not just in International Show Jumping and International Dressage but those in Racing who surely must also be affected.
